Craig is a DCHS graduate from the class of 1968
He is the son of Ren Carroll Groninger and Mary Alice Groninger Segall, and was coached by Tony Berto.

Craig was named to the 1967 UPI All-State Team, and played on two of the undefeated teams of the 1960s.

After high school Craig graduated from Ball State and Indiana University's School of Optometry. He has two daughters Kambi and Erin, and a 3 grandchildren Drew, Halle, and Kendall.
