เวลาที่เราต้องการสอบถามหรือพูดแทรกระหว่างที่คนอื่นกำลังพูดอยู่ ตามมารยาทแล้ว ต้องกล่าวว่า Excuse me (ขอโทษที) ก่อน ลองศึกษาสถานการณ์ต่อไปนี้ และทำความเข้าใจวิธีการสอบถามหรือพูดแทรก การขอบคุณ การขอโทษ การขออนุญาตเพื่อที่จะสามารถใช้ได้อย่างถูกต้อง

Situation 1

Suda : Excuse me, Is this seat unoccupied?

Chaba : Yes, it is.

Suda : Thank you.

Chaba : You're welcome. What's your name?

Suda : My name is Suda.

Chaba : Nice to meet you. I'm Chaba.

Situation 2

Malee : Excuse me, I want to go to the library. Could you please tell me the way?

Nasara : Certainly. Walk along this path. Turn left at the garden corner. Walk along to the NT building. Go inside that building and ask at the information, where the elevator is? Go up to the third floor. The library is there.

Malee : Where's the NT building?

Nasara : It's behind the Rector Office building.

ขอให้สังเกตว่ามารยาทในการพูดภาษาอังกฤษนั้น ถ้าจะถามหรือขออนุญาตทำอะไร จะขึ้นต้นด้วย Excuse me (ขอโทษ) แล้วต่อด้วยสิ่งที่ต้องทำ ดังตัวอย่าง

การใช้สำนวน Excuse me เป็นการแสดงถึงความสุภาพ

ถ้าจะตอบรับ จะใช้สำนวน

ถ้าจะตอบปฏิเสธ จะใช้สำนวน

Suda : I'm afraid you should ask the others first.

วิชัยถามสุดาว่าจะขอปิดหน้าต่างบานนั้นได้ไหม เพราะรู้สึกหนาว สุดาจึงตอบว่าควรถามคนอื่นก่อน

นอกจากวิธีการถาม การขออนุญาตและการตอบรับและปฏิเสธแล้ว ขอให้สังเกตว่าถ้าใครทำอะไรให้เราหรือช่วยเหลือเรา เราต้องกล่าวขอบคุณ (Thank you) ซึ่งมีวิธีพูดได้หลายอย่าง คือ
