A MESSAGE FROM
Principal Santos
Welcome back to an exciting new year! We missed all of our students and families and we are eager to welcome you back to campus. Together we will leap into 2023 with passion, curiosity, and love for everyone in our Solar Prep Girls community.
In preparation for this new semester, we've included important reminders and updates. It has been a long break, we hope you will take this weekend to rest, reset routines, and get excited for school.
As your child navigates this week back into the routine, keep in mind that emotions and temperaments may be a bit challenging before they get back into their groove. You can help by creating and keeping consistent routines at bedtime, making sure they are getting at least 10 hours of sleep every night and reminding them that they are capable of doing hard things! For more information about sleep and routines - see below.
Have an amazing week!
Here are some tips to stay healthy:
Flu season runs through March; it's NOT TOO LATE to get a flu shot!
Stay hydrated and eat an extra orange, grapefruit or Kiwi fruit– all high in Vitamin C!
Get fresh air and exercise - even taking a walk is great!
Wash hands often!
If someone in your family is sick, dedicate a drinking glass and silverware to the person so germs are not passed to others.
Hours of Sleep Needed by Age-
3-5 year olds need at least 10-13 hours
6-12 year olds need 10-11 hours
13-18 year olds need 8-10 hours
During the transition to a more consistent routine or at times in your child’s life when they have a lot going on, they may start to resist the routine or have trouble settling down.
Nighttime is a normal time to think about our worries. As parents, we do this too. When the day slows down and we lay down to sleep, sometimes in the quietness, we begin to notice our worries.
The same happens for children too. The difference is, that they may not be able to say, “Hey Mom/Dad, I’m stressed.” Instead, they say — “don’t leave,” “stay with me,” and “I can’t sleep.”
Here are some tips for when your child is having an extra hard time winding down.
Read a book together.
Practice nightly affirmations.
Take turns saying your favorite things out loud to set your brain up for the right types of thoughts and dreams.
Listen to a soothing podcast.
Make a list before bedtime of things you've accomplished and what you have left to do.
Sleep and nutrition are the two MOST important components of health and wellness for kids and MOST challenging behaviors are a result of children lacking the right amount of sleep and nutrition. As a staff we have to consider their sleep and nutrition meter each time we notice misalignment. When you encounter a challenge with your child - consider their sleep and nutrition meter. And if you need help, do not hesitate to reach out to our amazing counselors for more advice and resources!
Here's to great health in 2023!
The dress code is an important part of our school's culture and climate. Our goal is to provide safe, distraction free and productive learning environment.
Please label ALL your student's items! We want to keep hats, mittens, coats, water bottles, etc. out of the lost and found. It is much easier to return misplaced items when they are labeled.
Lower Elementary students will take their mid-year MAP test this week to measure progress in Math and Reading.
What is MAP Testing?
MAP, or Measure of Academic Progress, is an adaptive test given 3 times a year in August, January, and May. Teachers use this data to improve learning for all students and to work with parents to make informed decisions that promote a child’s individual academic growth. Your child’s guide will communicate your child’s score and growth from August to January.
Every school day counts in a child's academic life. A missed school day is a lost opportunity for students to learn. Read more about attendance and the ways families can support student success!
