A Newsletter for Families of Solar Preparatory School for Girls
A message from
Principal Santos...
This Thursday, November 13th from 5:30-7pm, we will have our first Preview Night for 4th-8th grades! This is a great opportunity for ANY family (a Solar family or not!) to come and learn about why Solar is the best choice for upper grades!
One of my goals as the leader of this organization is to provide a program that our Trailblazers and their families are excited to continue to participate in all the way until they become graduates in 8th grade.
There are a handful of components of our 4th-8th grade program that set us apart from all other schools. Here are the ones at the top of my list.
Teachers. Our teachers not only know their content but work very hard to keep each day engaging and challenging for our students. I have mentored principals and visited schools across our choice and magnet region, and I have not seen as consistently amazing teachers as the ones we have at Solar. I believe that the number one thing that determines a great school is the teachers, and I can confidently call our teachers the best middle school teachers in Dallas ISD.
Course Options. Our creative master schedule gurus (our middle school teacher schedule committee) created a 10-block schedule that allows our students the ability to participate in up to 6 elective and enrichment courses beyond the 4 advanced core subjects. Not only is our core curriculum exactly what students would be taking at a magnet school, most magnet and comprehensive schools require students to choose a path (Studio Art OR orchestra OR maker/engineering OR theater OR debate.)
At Solar, many of our students participate in 3 or 4 of these electives and feel so much more aware of their strengths and are more well rounded as they enter middle school. On top of that, our teachers have made our 10th block into an enrichment block where students participate in a fun enrichment course (ie. pickle ball, creative writing, art journaling), targeted instruction, Girl Scouts and STEAM Fridays. This opportunity for students is not offered at any other middle school in Dallas ISD.
Communication Skills. Our goal for our students before they reach high school is for them to have multiple opportunities to speak in front of large groups and practice their communication skills. We have had multiple high schools reach out to us to ask how our students have become such confident speakers? This is all a result of daily intentional practice, building self-awareness and focus on sharing their voices.
Social-Emotional Learning. Studies show that the social and academic contexts of traditional middle grade schools may not be well-aligned with early adolescents’ developmental needs for feeling connected to others, cooperation (instead of competition) with their classmates, and a sense of autonomy in their learning. Knowing who our students are as human beings during one of the most tumultuous times in their lives as their brains are rewiring and creating the image of themselves that they will carry with them into high school and beyond, has had the most significant impact on the success of our students. Our focus on social-emotional learning in middle school creates an environment where our teachers know our students. They team up to discuss students needs and ways to help support them through this tough transition. Our advisory block each morning allows our students to build strong connections and practice the skills to help them stay organized, self-regulate and practice self-awareness.
Diversity. While other magnet options may offer the opportunity for students to participate in a program with other students at a similar advanced academic level, our program provides the opportunity for students to interact and engage in meaningful conversations and learn from an extremely diverse group of students from all over the metroplex. This is one of the most critical pieces of what makes us Solar and what I truly believes sets our students up for success in spaces beyond our walls. They are able to demonstrate empathy, participate in collaborative groups and seek to understand and connect with others who may not look like them or share common values and interests. In our current environment as a nation, looking beyond the surface of our peers to find value in the differences in others and seeing the benefit that each individual brings to the group, regardless of their beliefs and backgrounds, is quite possibly the secret sauce to success for our future.

You probably noticed that you received a LOT more permission and consent forms than every before this year. I first want to apologize that all the forms have come home without explanation. I will work to ensure that in the future with each form that comes home is well explained.
New legislation from the 89th Texas Legislative Session requires parents and guardians to provide annual consent for certain school-based services and activities. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) distinguishes between services that require opt-in consent (consent must be provided before service can be delivered) and services where parents may opt out (consent is assumed unless declined). Some services are always provided in emergencies or as general caretaking.
If you do not complete the form:Your child will not receive services that require opt-in. They will continue to receive opt-out services (unless you decline in writing) and services that are always provided.
These are the forms that have gone home so far:
Health Services Opt-in form. (this includes consent for mental health/counseling)
Clubs Permission forms (if we do not get these this week, your child will not be allowed to stay for clubs)
Girl Scouts Permission form (Because GS is an outside entity that provides us with curriculum to deliver during the school day, and students become GS members through our partnership, a separate form is required.) We were originally given the wrong from by the Girl Scout team which asked for a social security number. This was not correct. We will be sending home the revised form and shredding the previous forms that were returned.
Socio-economic form. This form impacts our funding and state accountability. We have to have a form to document each family's income. In order to retain our 50/50 status, we need to have forms to prove socio-economic status. You can check on the form that you prefer not to share your total income and it will automatically assume that you make over the amount listed here. In the future this form will be sent in an envelope so that you are able to return the form directly to the front office.
As part of FERPA and DISD laws, all information shared with our staff is confidential and will not be shared with any other person or entity. We appreciate your support Please reach out to your child's teacher if you need to upate information on a form or if you need a new form. Please reach out to me directly if you have any feedback or need any more information.
⚕️👩🏻⚕️ NURSE VISITS & IMMUNIZATIONS: If you have not submitted your immunization documentation or filled out your student's permission form, please do so.
NOTE 1:
A 30-day provisional enrollment is available only to the following student groups:
• Students transferring from one Texas school to '
another Texas school.
• Students who are defined as homeless according to
the federal McKinney-Vento Act 42 U. S. C. Section
111434a.
• Foster children enrolling in a new school.
• Active-duty military dependents enrolling in a new
school.
NOTE 2:
A student may be enrolled provisionally if the student has an immunization record that indicates the student has received at least one dose of each specified age-appropriate vaccine required by this rule. To remain enrolled, the student must complete the required subsequent doses in each vaccine series on schedule and as rapidly as is medically feasible and provide acceptable evidence of vaccination to the school. A school nurse or school administrator shall review the immunization status of a provisionally enrolled student every 30 days to ensure continued compliance in completing the required doses of vaccination. If, at the end of the 30-day period, a student has not received a subsequent dose of vaccine, the student is not in compliance and the school shall exclude the student from attendance until required dose is administered.
NOTE 3:
Exemptions from immunization requirements may be granted on a medical basis or for reasons of conscience. A medical exemption, signed by a physician, is required annually if not otherwise stated by the physician. Exemption for reasons of conscience must be submitted on an affidavit provided by the Texas Department of State Health Services. Exemption for reason of conscience is granted for two years.
Exemptions are not recognized in time of epidemics. Students will need to be immunized or not attend school if an epidemic is declared by
the Commissioner of Health.
NOTE 4:
To ensure the health and safety of all students, we ask that parents and guardians submit updated immunization records as soon as possible. Administration will be reaching out to families whose records are not up to date. Thank you for helping us maintain a safe and healthy learning environment for everyone.
