What is design thinking?
Design thinking is an iterative process, a process where a problem is identified then solutions are generated, tested, and revised. Problem solvers and innovators at any level of experience can practice the design thinking process. Whether in literature, art, music, science, engineering, business, politics, etc., designers can apply these human-centered techniques to solve problems in creative and innovative ways. Design thinking is a solution-based approach to thinking, working, and solving problems of all sizes.
Why design thinking for D127?
Our goal is to establish a common process and language for students in District 127 to eliminate confusion and improve engagement as we implement problem solving opportunities across disciplines. Over time, this design thinking process will become the way our students think as they identify and solve REAL problems within and outside of our schools.
What does implementation look like?
The design thinking process can be used...
By individuals or in groups
As a whole process or to focus on individual steps
In or out of order
Within 10 minutes or over 10 weeks
To create tangible products or to theorize possibilities
By novices or experts in design
Every situation is going to be different when considering the implementation of the design thinking process. It is important to customize for your specific situation but be explicit about the common language and intention of the steps.
