Houston is a city of culture and diversity. I have grown up in this community learning many new things about the culture and the many different ways that the cultures are expressed. My playlist will express one of the many cultures I grew up in within my hometown of Houston, Texas. I will also be expressing the religion I have grown up with during my time of being in Houston.
One of the many cultures that I will be expressing is my Latin culture of being a kid from a Hispanic household and family. Being in this family, I learned so much about my culture and the few origins of the culture. In my culture, many genres of music have influenced me as a Hispanic person and it has made an impact on my life as I was growing up due to the different ways that the music was expressed.
Growing up in Houston there is a large variety of Hispanic culture that can be seen in our sports teams and even through many of our schools. The music in my playlist is a genre of music that is called “Cumbia”. Cumbia is one of the many genres that can be seen in Hispanic culture, the many other genres are corridos, norteñas, and even huapangos. All of these genres of music can be seen used in the Hispanic culture which most are used for dancing. For example, there is a thing in my culture where the child experiences a special moment of conversion from childhood to “Adulthood” which is called a quinceanera. In this event, there are many genres of music used, but the main ones used in these events are huapangos and cumbias.
While in the topic of quinces, these events are portrayed as one of the biggest events of a child's experiences in life. To specify a quince is a sweet 15 and often can even be considered a sweet 16. There are so many different events that may be affiliated with this type of music that many listen to and it is one of the biggest genres that are heard from in my life of being a Hispanic.
As for religious music, this has had one of the greatest impacts on my life as a teen. Not many people like to listen to this type of music, but listening to this music has helped me increase my faith in being on my road with God in the journey of life. This music can be heard by many Catholics this is due to the belief that listening to secular music may affect the person as a Catholic. This music has been used in many events, as to name one in my personal experience I was able to first get a glance at this music genre as of being at an event called AYC. This event was led by the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston which is an event to help younger children increase their faith in their beliefs.
To conclude, these genres of music have had a great impact on me and my hometown as Houston is a city of diversity which shows how great of a culture the town of Houston may be. This music has shown much to the hometown of Houston of the way we express our culture and differences which is through the music we may listen to in our everyday lives.
The things that impaired me in writing this story were my family and my culture. The music in my culture is significant to many events that we have in our culture, such as a quinceanera. The theme that I have explored as of writing this story is culture through the significance it has and the impact it has made in my life. When writing this playlist I can express myself in a cultural sense through the songs provided I can explain the expressive ways that the music and culture can have an impact on the way someone feels, through the tone of the artist’s voice and through the lyrics that they sing along to so as for the intensity or even calmness provided in the music. This music helps me express my culture, showing many people how great the culture can be through the art of music that is made from the Hispanic culture.
