The podcast that changed my whole mindset was “Ryan Garcia Tells All: De La Hoya, Mayweather & Canelo, Announces Next Fight.” Ryan Garcia's boxing career was filmed with Patrick Bet-David. Ryan discusses how he balances being a boxer, a family man, and a social media influencer. He explains who he can seek counsel from and who he trusts. These two topics impacted me the most because they dealt with trust and balancing everything in your life. When these topics are discussed I listen because it gives me a perspective of the person opening up and talking about how he trusted someone and how the significant other broke that bond. It makes me reflect on my decisions in life, whom I'm close to, who to trust, and who to keep an eye out for. Ryan Garcia also reflects on how to balance his life with everything that is happening to him. He gives us a better insight into how he goes about his day and deals with haters and people who wish him the worst. This stood out to me because I've encountered people who don't like you or don't want to see you succeed. Ryan Garcia is a role model to me in that I can relate to him and listen to his advice based on his experiences. The way he sees criticism is a way of ongoing motivation to do whatever you want for yourself and others.
Ryan Garcia says, “Use your anger and store it for outgoing motivation.” This quickly became my favorite line from the whole podcast because it suggests waking up every morning knowing what you want and advocating for yourself and no one else. You have to want it bad. He discusses his secret to success and how he wakes up every day with no hesitation and 100 percent motivation. It made me think of my dad when he wakes up every day to go to work and my mom who wakes up every day to take me to school and take care of the family. She makes sure everything is going and how it should be going, for example, making sure the uniforms are ready to go for the next school day. It makes me reflect on everything they do for me and advocate for me and my siblings, and it makes me want to repay them with a big reward someday.
Some new concepts I've learned from the podcast are different athletes' mentalities. For example, Kobe Bryant discusses a memorable concept called the “Mamba Mentality,” which gave others the hope and drive to believe they could be anything they wanted to with hard work and perseverance. “'Mamba mentality' is all about focusing on the process and trusting in the hard work when it matters the most." Bryant’s mentality set people up for success. He even published a book about hardship situations and scenarios and suggestions for having a better mentality. The “Mamba Mentality” teaches us that we can follow our passion, but we need to prove our value through hard work.
This podcast made me curious about many different things. How Ryan Garcia got up even at his lowest point in life even when he told the whole world he was going to win that fight. It makes me think of what it was like for him at night when the lights were off and he was alone at night and about to go to sleep. What did he tell himself? How did he fight through those mixed emotions? He might have felt emotions such as hatred, embarrassment, and regrets. It makes me go back to when I was feeling those emotions as well. How would I relate to him if he was still alive? It helps me get my thought process all together and not in the spot I once was in. The most important question it makes me think is, if the bad things that happened to us never actually happened, would we be the same person? How different would we be if the bad things that happened to us had never happened? After all this pain, laughs, and criticism, he manages to stand up and keep fighting. How is he that capable? How does he get that energy to wake up every day early to get his day done?
What inspired me to write my essay was my role model Ryan Garcia. He had the power to change my whole mindset for the better and wanted other people's mindset to be changed for the better. The writing process was easier for me because I find writing for and everyone easy. Writing an essay is not only for me but for other people to see my ideas outside the ordinary. This essay is about a person heading into adulthood and how his mindset has changed over the years.
