Positive Feedback of the Week 👍

Email sent to Ms Andouard and Ms Knight

The School of Sanctuary Assessment Panel met on Friday and went through all the applications.

"We are absolutely delighted to say that they have awarded you the School of Sanctuary status.  We recognised that you have worked so hard to support your asylum seeking pupils and their families.  You put the application together in a short time and built on the excellent practice that already existed in your  EAL Department, to develop more of a whole school strategic approach to meeting the needs of sanctuary seeking students."

Announcements and Reminders

School of Sanctuary

School of Sanctuary is a growing network of more than 680 primary and secondary schools, nurseries and sixth forms all committed to creating a culture of welcome, understanding and belonging for those forced to flee.

Driven by teachers, school staff, parents, governors and community groups, this network supports the thousands of children and young people seeking sanctuary in the UK, raises awareness of the experiences of people seeking safety, and plays a key role in building a culture of kindness and compassion.⁣

We are delighted to announce that the brilliant support that Cotham School provides to our vulnerable students has been recognised with the School of Sanctuary Award.

As part of Cotham School becoming a school of Sanctuary, the EAL (English as an Additional Language) team and some Student Executive Leadership Team ( SELT) students delivered assemblies this week to Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 on the topic of Sanctuary and why it's important to welcome and support Asylum Seekers and Refugees.  Students took it all in and showed great empathy and compassion.  Well done everyone!

New Rail Strike Announced on Wednesday 8 May 2024

ASLEF (train drivers) union have announced new industrial action at the start of May, as part of a rolling programme of strikes across operators.

ASLEF members will be on strike at GWR (as well CrossCountry, Chiltern Railways, West Midlands Trains and other operators) on Wednesday 8 May.  On this day many parts of GWR network will have no service whatsoever, and where we are able to run, services will start late and finish much earlier than usual.

GWR customers that do travel should check before doing so at www.gwr.com/check.  There may also be alterations to our services on the evening of Tuesday 7 May and morning Thursday 9 May.

Anybody who has already bought a ticket for travel on Wednesday 8 May will be able to claim a full refund. For full information please visit www.gwr.com/strike.

ASLEF have also announced action short of a strike effective from Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May.  While GWR will plan to run as full a service as possible (Wednesday 8 May excepted), there may be short notice alterations and cancellations because this industrial action will mean GWR only have a very limited number of spare drivers.

Year 10 Shoutouts

Miss Madge gives a shout out to: Naima, Humza, Hussain, Yasin, Bella, Sulaiman, Seth, Ethan, Conor, Mahamud and Imran in 10Y for working SO hard in their History revision lesson.  They studied and revised in silence for an hour which will really help them for their exams.  They are stars!

Year 10 Exams

Year 11

Year 11 Attendance

We are becoming increasingly concerned about the decline in Year 11 attendance since the start of the new term.  Most lessons now are focused on exam preparation with a particular focus on exam paper practice and exam technique. In addition, teachers will be revisiting content and doing revision of key aspects of the curriculum for their subjects which are likely to be the focus in exams.  When your child is not in school, they are missing out on this guidance.  Please ensure that your child attends school regularly until study leave starts on Friday 10 May.

Year 11 Revision Resources

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the resources that are available on google classroom to support your child's revision. They are also attached. The revision to do sheets provide your child with revision activities for each subject.  The Walking Talking Mocks provide your child with videos showing students how to answer exam-style questions.

We hope you find these useful.

Gamma House and Prefect Update

We are gearing up to say goodbye to our wonderful team of House Prefects as our Year 11s approach their final days of taught lessons.  Prefects have continually modelled good manners and habits in order to support our wider Cotham School community.  They've supported their Heads of Houses in leading assemblies, organising house competitions, promoting the school at open evenings and assisting in Student Voice.  They have been wonderful to work with & are a shining example of outstanding students.
