New Announcements

SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH’S URGENT MESSAGE IN SONG – FREE TO EVERY SCHOOL
Sir David Attenborough’s inspirational message about the urgent need to address climate change has been set to music by former Lancashire and North Yorkshire headteacher Brian Beresford, as a completely free song for all schools and children.

A group of children from Whalley CE Primary School, Lancashire, was given the honour of recording the special song. During the project the children discussed climate change, as highlighted by Sir David, and the words used in the song, including, ‘There is a moment when we can change the world and make it better: this is the moment’. They also learnt about the recording process, including the way instruments have been mixed with their voices to produce a performance.

Brian explained that he wanted to help children to understand the climate emergency and to share Sir David’s inspiration with those singing and hearing the song. He said, “I hope the song reaches a wide audience that can also be inspired by Sir David’s message.”

The song is found on YouTube channel, by searching for ‘This is the Moment (Life on Earth)’. The direct link is https://youtube.com/watch?v=dZNPdG3MQsE There is also a separate backing track on YouTube https://youtube.com/watch?v=Cu3W8zThzms

An e-mailed FREE simple piano accompaniment can be requested by contacting thisisthemoment2023@aol.com

No-one will make financial gain from production of the song, which is a gift to all children.

Film on 'honour culture' involving Cotham students

Inez is in an Integrate film about honour culture. She became involved with Integrate initially through Cotham but now goes of her own accord. The film is 10 minutes long and Inez has a significant role. A few other Cotham students were extras too: Sylvie, Hanna, Leila, Isobel and Ruby.

Blame Her is an educational resource used to promote discussion with students on the warning signs of honour abuse. The film is very worthy of a watch! It is about honour culture and LGBTQ plus issues.

Year 8

The KS3 cinema experience was a brilliant success. Students with 0 behaviour points got popcorn, crisps and chocolate and watched Home Alone, a classic film, in the main hall. They all thoroughly enjoyed it! We are hoping to organise more activities like this, to praise our students who are playing a great role within our school community.

The winners of the Y8 tutor football competition were announced in Friday's assembly. 8FW played really well and won the tournament based on their final scores. They got to celebrate this by having a KFC for lunch on Friday! It was really lovely to celebrate with them.

After the class shuffles, many teachers have been letting me know how well the revised classes are working. This is really great news and I know the year 8 students will continue to thrive !

There were some administration jobs that needed doing so I gave the names of 8 students, 4 of whom helped on Tuesday 28th and 4 on Wednesday 29th  November. All of them received high praise from the administration team for their helpfulness and organisation.

Finally, well done to 8SI who have the lowest amount of ASDs this week! All of the students in that tutor group have contributed to this.

Louisha's role is to positively represent the views of children and young people in their Local Authority. Part of their role will be to attend the House of Commons Sitting in London. MYPs are the only group, other than MPs, to sit on the green benches, and this is a unique opportunity.  At this event, 300 elected Members of the UK Youth Parliament aged 11-18 will take part in a debate in the House of Commons chamber. 434,000 young people voted in the 2022 Make Your Mark ballot, with Health and Wellbeing coming out as the top issue. This grew over the last following focus groups and debates into a Food for Learning campaign, advocating for free school meals in schools. At the House of Commons 2023, they will debate the 5 topics shortlisted for the Food For Learning Bill: Holiday Hunger, Quality of Food, Standardisation, Financing and Funding, and Additional Pricing.

Performing Arts Winter Sharing

Thursday 7 December - Main Hall 18:30

Join us for an evening of Performing Arts, celebrating the achievement of our students from all key stages across Dance, Drama and Music.

The evening will feature performances from a variety of musical soloists from across the key stages, jazz band, Year 7 and 8 choir, our Key Stage 3 dance companies and year 7 Drama club.

The Winter Sharing is a Pay what you choose event.

How does it work?

On Pay What You Choose events, when you checkout, you’ll be given a choice of 3 different prices:

£2 - Open Concession – If this is what you can afford; book this rate and let us welcome you with open arms.

£4 - Standard – If you can afford to, please book this rate; the extra money you give will support the continued existence of the variety of extra-curricular performances put on at Cotham School.

£6 - Pay It Forward – If you’re feeling generous and you have the means, please consider choosing this rate. Each Pay It Forward ticket subsidises two concession tickets, and helps more people experience the delight of watching live performance.

All you have to do is select the price bracket that best suits your budget and continue to checkout.

Climate Challenge

Mr Worster who took several of our students to the Climate Challenge event at City Hall.  You may remember last year this event started off a campaign of the Climate Committee and resulted in a Green Day run by the Bristol Education Partnership Student Leadership Trainees at the time. We now have much improved recycling facilities around the school and this project day this week will help to enhance this work further.

Student Leadership Training Session 3

Student leadership programme trainees had their 3rd session this week at Redmaid's on Communication, accompanied by Mr Buchanan  A great workshop.  On top of their work already on -shadowing a leader, they are currently planning a team building activity with the Humanities Faculty to test their own leadership skills in getting another team to work together, as well as now using the Communication workshop to prepare a speech on a topic of their choice.

Their social action project in the summer term is still in the pipeline too.  The students are really enjoying these training sessions and always come away learning new skills as well as interacting with lots of their peers from other BEP schools.

Sigma House raised a massive £286 in the bake Sale for Palestine in 15 minutes which is a new record for bake sale fundraising! Bristol Grammar School Stem Cafe – The Right Light at Night – Thursday 7 December 4pm

Steve Tonkin, Dark Skies Advisor to the International Dark Sky Reserve will be speaking about light pollution and the importance of dark skies.

Light Pollution was first identified as a problem by astronomers, but its consequences reach far wider. It is now widely recognised that artificial light at night, especially bright white light, can have profoundly negative effects on human health, and this is just the tip of an iceberg of harm. The effects on wildlife have been devastating, leading directly to the death of billions of birds each year and being the major driver of the insect apocalypse (studies suggest that 40% of insects will be extinct within the next few decades).

The solutions are at hand, are simple to implement, will have a net saving (of money, energy use and carbon emissions) and will not compromise security or our ability to safely work, travel and play at night. We need to act now.

There will also be a chance to look through a telescope after the talk to see the night sky for yourself (weather dependent).

This event is open to everyone including friends and family members of any BGS pupils and pupils of other local schools. Visitors please wait in reception and someone will come and escort you to the event. There is no need to book.  If you wish to attend or have any questions please email stem@bgs.bristol.sch.uk.  Refreshments will be provided.

Free NHS app helps parents care for their poorly child

'It can be difficult to know whether your child is too ill to attend school. NHS guidance is clear that it’s fine to send them in with a minor cough or common cold, provided they don’t have a temperature.”

Please see link below on NHS guidance for parents/carers

https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/is-my-child-too-ill-for-school/

As winter sets in and common childhood illnesses become more frequent, parents are being encouraged to use a free NHS app to help them decide how best to care for their child.

The HANDi app, which has been developed by a team of specialist children’s doctors, is quick and easy to use and gives parents and carers expert advice on a range of childhood illnesses. These include diarrhoea and vomiting, high temperature, tummy pain, chestiness, head injuries and common problems experienced by newborn babies.

The app takes parents through a series of questions about their child’s symptoms and then advises on the best course of action, whether that’s to treat at home, to make a GP appointment, call NHS 111 or call 999.

The HANDi App is available to download for Apple phones from the app store or iTunes and for Android phones at Google Play. Alternatively, please use the following QR code:
