College can be very expensive, especially for those who struggle financially. Luckily, scholarships can help pay for the expensive costs that come with attending college.
Students at CHS are advised to apply for scholarships in their junior and senior years. The College Career Center has provided resources for students to find and pick the scholarships they want to apply for.
“Students can find a link in Canvas that will take them to a Google Sheets page,” says College & Career counselor Jessica Beckam. “The page will feature an organized list of available scholarships as well as their due dates, potential reward amount, and other important details.”
Students can also look to the CHS staff for assistance with looking for and applying for scholarships, specifically their school counselors.
“Students can come down to the College and Career Center for resources on applying for colleges and scholarships,” says counselor Courtney Tulia. “They can also sign up for college visits if they want information on school-specific colleges.”
The process for applying for a scholarship varies depending on the school. Some require students to write an essay, while others give them out based on the students’ hours of community service.
“I won the all means all scholarship in 9th grade,” said junior Kensie Lucy. “I had to write an essay on how being a first gen student has impacted my life and I had to get two letters of recommendations.”
Many students value scholarships as they make it easier to pay for college, especially for those planning to attend the more expensive private colleges.
“Scholarships are important because not everyone is able to get money for school but everyone deserves the chance to have education,” said junior Sarah Pernia Soto.
There are still many scholarships available for CHS students who plan to attend college after high school, so don’t dilly dally and go get ‘em Tigers!
