In July of this year, Hill County experienced a severe flash flood that destroyed much of the surrounding area and took many lives. The geography of the Central Texas area caused the water to rise twenty-seven feet in just forty-five minutes, creating a new record. After this devastating event, three young girls from CHS sprang into action.
The fundraiser was started by the Conroe Culinary SkillsUSA organization and entirely student-led. The goal was to collect school supplies and essentials for the students who were affected by the flooding. Founders Isabella (District 7 Chairperson), Onika (Conroe Culinary Chapter President), and Gabriella (Conroe Culinary Chapter Historian) ran the initiative from July 25th to October 5th.
Co-Founder and Senior, Isabella, states her motivation for this incredible act of charity, “Many of these students' families lost basic essentials, and as students ourselves we understood the stress of the back-to-school season. For those families to balance basic needs with resources for a proper education was something we wanted no family to face.”
In hindsight, these girls managed to collect over 1,300 supplies and raise over $500 for these struggling students. All of the supplies were delivered to students in need at Leander ISD via bus, hence the name “Stuff-A-Bus’. These girls demonstrated a wonderful example of leadership, charity, and community togetherness to provide to students and families in need after a difficult time. Their drive to help after devastation is inspiring and a perfect model of what it means to be a Conroe Tiger.
