Another year, another season. Girls basketball team has been pushing themselves to win district and to play in the playoffs.
Girls’ team is buzzing with anticipation. Whether it’s competing for championships, building team chemistry, or showcasing individual skills, players are eager to make their mark this year. So what exactly has these athletes so excited about this season? Here is what basketball girls are most looking forward to this season. “Competition and to see how much we can improve.” junior Riley Gross said.
Everybody in the varsity and sub-varsity teams has set their goals for this season, as well as the head coach, Coach Houston. “My goals for the team this year is for the girls to have fun, for each player to improve and make it to the playoffs,” Coach Houston said. “The past two years we haven’t made it past the first round, so that is on the list as well… to not only make it, but win.” Since the goals have been set, the team has started practicing, pushing the limit. They have been playing two games in a week. Starting from November 19th, against College Park was their first play of the district games.
Started the first three games against College Park, The Woodlands, and Oak Ridge lost but managed to get up and work even harder. “Our biggest challenge this season would be to make it into the playoffs, as we started off rough but we are fighting our way back.” junior Taylor Smith said.
More so, girls are improving their weaknesses and maintaining their current skills. “I’ve been working on mainly shooting and different finish moves at the basket.” freshman Kayleigh Phillips said. Same with her teammate, junior Riley Gross said “I’ve been working on shooting and conditioning.”
At the end of the district games, the girl’s basketball team has won 10 games with six losses, placing them in 4th place in the district. Most of the losses, the girls lost by less than five points which makes it close competitive games. “With our athleticism and speed, we do a decent job on the defense end,” said Coach Houston. “Now, while we have that capability, we are struggling to score the ball right now. I must do a better job of building their confidence so they believe that they can make the shots.”
On the way to the playoffs, the first round game in Bi-District was against Nimitz High School. On February 11th, 7 p.m.at Kingwood Park High School, the gymnasium was full of each two team's supporters. First two quarters were competitive tie rounds.
Last two quarters, the girls basketball team was slowly losing points and ended up losing the season.
Even though they lost, they enjoyed every moment spent with their teammates and having fun. “My favorite thing about playing basketball this season was the people, and the relationships and bonds I made while playing.” junior Taylor smith said.
Lastly, they shared some advice about playing basketball and getting better. “I would say always hustle and never compare yourself to anyone,” freshman Kayleigh Phillips said. “Even if you aren’t the best, your hustle will always be something great to have. While comparing yourself to someone else will only make you think too hard about the game and could potentially make you lose focus of the player you actually are.”
