A government shutdown has occurred in the U.S, but really what does that mean? A shutdown typically happens when lawmakers cannot decide on where and what to fund. Most government services are delayed, or even stopped, meaning that national parks, passports, social service and everything under the government are hard and unavailable to process/access. This usually is an effect of the two parties disagreeing and ideological differences. As in the 2024 election caused commotion and conflicts that led to a struggle of compromise and negotiation.
But as high school students, how does that affect your daily lives? This could have an effect on reduced lunches as that is supported and funded by the federal government. Mental health services in schools like counselors are supported by federal grants. This could lead to students not getting the support they need. Military and ROTC programs could also be dealing with delays.
There are many more problems and future situations that education and students could experience as the shutdown continues, but there are some key points you should keep in mind.
Seeking alternative resources are an important part of keeping an eye out for, especially the losses of reduced lunches, making sure students receive their basic needs are important and should be top priority as some students may not be able to have access to support. Students should also stay informed about financial aids. Seniors should stay informed about future scholarships, private loans, and state based aids. Lastly is to stay in touch with adults that may help with disruptions and situations in which you need support and help.
The government shutdown has a big effect nationwide, especially in the education system, but while staying informed and being prepared throughout this tough time, students can overcome and prevail from what is going on.
