Josh Mitchell Park

Tragedy struck the community of Big Lake on August 1, 2012 when Deputy Josh Mitchell was killed in the line of duty. Deputy Mitchell was a native of Big Lake and served as the DARE and K9 officer for the Reagan County Sheriff's Department.

The idea for a monument to honor Deputy Mitchell was born during a meeting of the JRMA. Then-councilmember Phil Pool was in attendance of the meeting and he brought the idea before the Big Lake City Council to build a park in memory of Deputy Mitchell. With the assistance of the JRMA, City of Big Lake, Big Lake Economic Development Corporation and many generous donors, the Josh Mitchell Park came to fruition.

Today, the park is enjoyed by countless children on a daily basis. The City of Big Lake preserves the memory of Deputy Josh Mitchell by maintaining the upkeep of the park to provide a fun, safe environment for the children.
