Registration Required For All Golf Carts Operated On City Streets

Section 12.06.002 of the Big Lake Code of Ordinances requires all golf carts operated on streets and parking areas of the city must be registered with the City on annual basis in January of each year. The registration fee is $12.00 per year and a registration form will be available at City Hall for residents to complete and provide the basic information needed. All operators must meet state law driver's license requirements and age limit to operate a golf cart. Any person violating this ordinance, upon conviction, shall be deemed guilty of a Class C misdemeanor and shall be fined up to $500.00 plus Court Costs. 

Door To Door Solicitors

The City has become aware of several complaints involving subjects who are soliciting their product to residents.  Please be aware that these individuals are required to be permitted to sell to the public.  You, as a resident, are encouraged to ask to see their City issued permit.  You may ask them to leave your property, if you wish.  If they fail to do so, you may contact the Sheriff's Department at 325-884-2424 for further assistance. -

E-Bikes and E-Scooters

Ordinance 260804-01 regarding operation of Electric Scooters and Electric Bicycles was adopted by the Big Lake City Council on August 4, 2026.  The ordinance defines an electric bicycle as a bicycle equipped with fully operable pedals; and an electric motor.  This definition does not include a pocket bike or a mini-motorbike.  Starting in January, 2027, all electric bicycles and electric scooters will need to be registered with the City to be lawfully operated on streets and parking areas of the City.  They must be registered on annual basis in January of each year.  The registration fee will be $12.00 per year, and a registration form will be available at City Hall. 

Every operator of an E-Bike or E-Scooter who is less than 15 years old must wear a properly fitted and fastened protective helmet.   Operators must comply with all applicable traffic laws under the Texas Transportation Code and City regulations.  Operators must always yield to pedestrians; yield to on-coming traffic; come to a complete stop at stop signs and traffic signals; and are prohibited from using a handheld cellular telephone, portable electronic device or similar communication device while operating an E-Bike or E-Scooter unless it is in hand-free mode.

No other passenger other than a sole operator may ride upon an E-Bike or an E-Scooter when ridden on a street or a sidewalk. 

An operator who is less that 15 years of age may not operate an E-Bike or an E-Scooter at nighttime (30 minutes after sunset and lasts until 30 minutes before sunrise).  An operator, other than a minor (less than 15 years of age), may not operate an E-Bike or E-Scooter at nighttime unless it is equipped with: A lamp on the front that emits a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet in front of the E-Bike or E-Scooter; A rear, red light reflector that is visible when directly in front of vehicle headlamps from all distances from fifty (50) feet to three hundred (300) feet, or a rear lamp that emits a red light visible from a distance of five hundred (500) feet to the rear of the E-Bike or E-Scooter.

An operator, including a minor, who violates any provision of this article shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction thereof, shall be subject to a fine up to $500.00 plus Court Costs.  A parent or guardian of a minor who knowingly permits, or by insufficient control allows, a minor to violate any provision of this article shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction thereof, shall be subject to a fine up to $500.00 plus Court Costs.
