- When using the belt sander in the shop, to smooth a surface, first, make sure to use proper safety equipment.
- Second, make sure that your clothing is completely out of the way. Belt sanders have a great amount of torque, loose-fitting clothing should be kept clear of the sander.
- Begin by turning on the sander and allowing the motor to get up to full speed, don't forget to turn the fan switch on, to absorb residue from what you're sanding.
- Then, using two hands, ease the wood on the belt sander with a slight forward motion. Not all of the wood should come in contact with the sander at the same time or you could lose control, then set the rest of the wood on the face of the belt sander.
- The belt will tend to grab the wood and drive the wood forward, so hang on rather tightly. A belt sander, can easily tear through a large amount of wood very quickly, so keep the wood moving. Stop to check the progress frequently, it's much more efficient to work in small increments using light pressure on the sander.
- When changing the belt on the belt sander, always turn off the power, before starting.
- The belt sander has a release lever on one side that will release the tension between the front and back roller.
- Once the tension is released, slide the old or worn sanding belt off of the rollers. To apply a new belt, center a new belt onto the rollers, and tighten the tension to use the sander again.
