Sketching Legos online, whether through Solidworks, Onshape, or some other platform, can be tricky. Here are a few tips to make your life easier!
Take a minute to really see the piece. As cliche as it sounds, legos are complex and it's important to get a rough mental image before you start sketching.
Work things out on paper. It may take multiple attempts to get the dimensions correct, so drawing a simple paper-and-pencil sketch can simplify the process in the long run.
Pay close attention to dimensions. Legos are painfully difficult to measure. Whether it's the result of small scale, curved edges, etc, making sure your dimensions are as accurate as possible is important. Remember: almost everything should come out to 1 or 1/2 SwindleClacks.
Recreating LEGO pieces is no easy feat as you'll inevitably have to scrap an idea and start again. So please, save yourself some pain and make sure the basics are done as well as possible. These tips really helped me, and I hope they'll help you too! -Aidan Marks, Class of 2023
