Recommended transition reading

You may want to purchase this textbook to complement the work we do in class. Watching Spanish films or listening to podcasts is a great way to learn about the culture as well as practising your listening skills and broadening your vocabulary. 

Here are some current suggestions of Spanish films worth watching on Netflix. Try watching your all time favourite film with a Spanish sound track to allow your mind to anticipate how the dialogues might be phrased in Spanish. Watch Spanish animations with subtitles in Spanish ideally but English subtitles could be used inicially. 

In year 12 we study the film 'El Laberinto del Fauno' by Guillermo del Toro and in year 13 we read the novel 'Crónica de una Muerte Anunciada' by Gabriel García Márquez. Watching the film in English before September would give you an advantage. Learning about the history of Spain is also a great way to get started. In additional we will learn and investigate an array of Latin American countries. 

Summer Assignment

To ensure a confident start of the course, spend time consolidating all your GCSE regular and main irregular verb tenses: present, preterite, imperfect, perfect, simple future, conditional, present subjunctive. Please go over GCSE vocabulary.

Spanishdict.com is really helpful to practise your tenses. Click on the 3 little dots to find the grammar and conjugation drill sections. There are different levels of knowledge to choose from so challenge yourself. 

The following two workbooks compliment the course throughout the two years. We recommend starting the vocabulary and grammar activities or, for further challenge, the reading activities to really propel you into the first term.
