Welcome to Music
Congratulations on your GCSE results, and on choosing Music A level at Bohunt Sixth Form. Alongside our inspiring teaching team we have a strong and well-established team of instrumental teachers, and we look forward to finding out about your musical interests and supporting you on the next stage of your musical journey.
Every year, a fresh mix of musical students join the sixth form, whether or not they are studying A level Music, and as much as we offer you a wide range of opportunities and experiences, your musical interests and skills will also shape how music in the sixth form develops. Already firmly established are our full musical productions at Bedales Theatre every summer with live student/staff orchestra playing behind the stage, using a live video feed to co-ordinate with the cast (sixth formers often take a leading role on stage, in the orchesta/band, or) on the technical team. Also the 'Sounds of Bohunt' sixth form gig, ensemble concerts, county and cross-trust events, our huge and much-loved evening Carol Concert, and you can join or form a band or singing group within the sixth form and perform at our sleep out, compose for a drama production and even lead your own ensemble in the main school. It's up to you!

If you haven't already taken your Grade 5 theory, you should read and work through 'Discovering Music Theory, The ABRSM Grade 5 Workbook' which is available widely online.
Watch or listen to a range of BBC Proms (a festival of live, mostly classical, concerts at the Royal Albert Hall every summer). Many are broadcast on TV and iPlayer, but you could also attend one with friends or family because several hundred tickets are released on the day for each prom and they are under £10, meaning that every audience is full of struggling musicians, students and mega-fans in the standing area and up in the 'gods'.
Essential viewing for 2025 (as it is linked to our A level Music course) is 'The Great American Songbook and Beyond' broadcast on 19th July and available on iPlayer for at least a month afterwards.
Also recommended: Shostakovich’s Fifth by Heart (16 Aug, 7pm) - this includes actors who introduce the music in the first half and bring it to life, and the orchestra stand and move with lighting and graphics which work with them and the music.

TASK A Compose an 8 or 16-bar melody using 4 or 8 balanced phrases. Work in a major or minor key and begin and end on the tonic.1:
Present on manuscript paper or use Musescore (which is free to download). If handwriting, make sure you use a pencil!
EXTENSION - if you would like, add a simple accompaniment which harmonises the melody effectively.
TASK B Be ready to perform a short piece on your instrument (including voice). It does not need to be more than Grade 4 standard but should be 2-4 mins long.
