As we prepare to start you on your A level journey, after your long and well-earned summer, there are some things that you may consider doing. Have a look at our ‘I Heart Biology’ website where you will find a collection of resources and activities that I have selected. Whether it’s a podcast, documentary, film or a book, engaging with our subject outside the classroom is so important. Please take some time to watch, listen or read something that interests you over the summer!

Summer Assignment

During the first term of Y12 we carry out an exercise based on the story of Henrietta Lacks. In order to prepare for this, I ask that you spend a bit of time completing an assignment. 

The Hela cell line the greatest ‘discovery’ in science

Your task is to evaluate this statement. In order to do this, you will need to: Research Henrietta Lacks and her story; the benefits that the Hela cell line has given scientific research; the negative implications and effects of the Hela cell line. Give YOUR opinion. Do you agree with the statement? Do you disagree? JUSTIFY with evidence.

You can research using the internet, you can watch the film or you could read the book! (The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks). You can make a video or a poster, you may even choose to write an essay. Whatever you choose, I hope that you find the story as moving and as impactful as I did.
