Abstract
It is widely known that the elderly and those with comorbidities are more vulnerable to complications or even death from COVID19 than the general public. However, what is less known is the impact COVID19 has on liver functioning. In 2022, a study demonstrated that 58.06% of patients who died from COVID19 reported liver injury. A systematic review of medical research on liver functioning suggests that COVID19 is not only detrimental to those who have acute and chronic liver failure but may also be fatal for patients who did not have a preexisting liver condition prior to contracting COVID19. Moreover, I explore COVID19’s role in triggering autoimmune hepatitis. If more people understand the possibilities that may come out of a positive COVID19 test, they may take their symptoms seriously and avoid hesitating to seek medical assistance, which could dramatically reduce the cases of acute liver failure after contracting COVID19.
