5th/6th Class
November
In November, we took part in the Crocus Project initiative. This is a European project where children from all over Europe plant crocuses to remember all of the children who died in the Holocaust between 1939 and 1945. The crocuses will bloom in January, just in time for the annual Holocaust memorial day. The children also learned about genocides around the world since World War 2 and the plight of modern day refugees around the world.
We also explored Europe in great detail during the month. In pairs, we looked at different counties in the EU under the following headings-capital, currency, population, language, food, famous citizens, links with Ireland, how to get from Cork to there and the cost involved, main tourist attractions and going to primary school in that country.we all learned a great deal about our chosen countries.
In Science, we had great fun doing experiments involving mirrors. The lesson on mirror writing was great fun but very challenging.
In History, we looked at the battle of Knocknanuss which took place in Subulter in 1647. We were amazed to hear that it was the bloodiest battle of the English Civil War and over 6000 people died in the battle.
DECEMBER
December is always a really exciting time in the senior room.We did a lot of practicing for the Christmas concert which took place in St Mary`s Church,Castlemagner. We were all really happy with how we sang and how we did with our instrumental pieces. We have had great fun participating in the festive activities like art, drama etc. We have all written our Santa letters and can`t wait to see what he brings us on Christmas morning.
In Geography we learned about Australia and Holland. It was very interesting learning about the links between Australia and Ireland and how the Dutch succeeded in reclaiming land from the sea.
We have a confirmation mass on Christmas Eve where all of the class will be singing Christmas carols and participating in the readings for the mass.
