Dear families,
This time of year fills our classrooms with families, performances and culminating events that celebrate the deep learning taking place in the lower school. Here is a snapshot of some of what has happened over the past two weeks.
K1-2 Family Spring Celebration Families were welcomed into the ECC where K1-2 children showcased models of transportation and community: airplanes, trains, buildings, and even a tricycle. Children shared their vertical painting skills with artist testimonials that stopped us in our tracks: "I've been an artist my whole life." Ms. Carol's magic lives on --thank you for helping our children shine!
K3 Interdisciplinary Project Showcase K3 homeroom and MMM teachers hosted families for a live-action role play showcasing project-based learning at its best. Children took on roles as restaurant and cinema workers, weaving base 10 math and phonics into unforgettable family experiences.
G2 Legacy Celebration Families gathered as students presented their legacy projects and artwork. Students shared why their legacy matters to them, connecting it to their own family stories and reflecting on the actions we take to become a legacy ourselves. The artwork brought these big ideas beautifully to life.
Art Shows Students in Grades 1, 2, and 3 have filled the school with paintings, sculptures, sewing, puppets, and more - bringing creativity to life at ASM!
Musical Performances Grades 4 and 5 took the stage to perform and share original compositions. They wrote their own songs, collaborated on singing, drumming and instruments and sampled beats. The talent and joy in the room was electric!
More Learning Celebrations to come!
Wishing you rest, joy, and time with the people you love this break.
¡Felices Pascuas y Feliz Semana Santa!
Ms. Dani
Honoring Ms. Carol Vaughan
This week our community lost a beloved colleague and extraordinary teacher, Ms. Carol Vaughan, who taught in our Lower School from 1976 to 2021.
At the beginning of the K1-K2 Learning Celebration on Wednesday, we took a moment to honor her together. Ms. Whitney shared these words with our families:
"There's nothing like your child's preschool teacher. They open your child's world and your family's. The real trust and partnership that can be built is memorable for a lifetime. There is no question that Carol created that here at ASM with the children, families, and colleagues she served."
Ms. Carol spent 44 years teaching our youngest learners in K1, welcoming somewhere between 880 and 1,000 children and families into her classroom and into her heart. Her legacy lives on in the educators she mentored, the families she touched, and the children she helped shape. Some of those children are now parents in our community today.
Register here to attend the counselor's parent education session on The Impact of Social Media on Children's Mental Health. This session is geared towards parents of elementary aged children but Middle School parents are welcome to attend as well.
SIGN UP FOR OUR SUMMER CAMP IN ENGLISH --- This year’s Summer Camp will run from July 1-31.
Our camp aims to immerse children in the English language in a playful, fun, and informal way through a full-immersion camp-style approach that integrates the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Campers will learn English through educational games and hands-on projects and will also enjoy plenty of structured time outdoors each day. Many of our students have an intermediate or advanced level of English; therefore, our camp is also a wonderful option for proficient English speakers.
OPAL - A Visit from the British School of Milan
Last Friday we had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Lorenzo and Mr. David from the British School of Milan, who came to learn about our OPAL program. They were blown away by what they saw and heard, from the independence and knowledge our students demonstrated to the systems running smoothly and seamlessly with very few issues.
Our students were wonderful ambassadors, sharing their OPAL experience with enthusiasm and showing a deep understanding of the program.
Our visitors shared these words: "Your pupils stand testament to the resounding success of what you have collectively cultivated. Their agency, courtesy and joy tell a clear story of the terrific work you are doing and the tremendous effort and passion which has led to where you are."
Our award-winning OPAL program continues to evolve with great work from the OPAL team. Thanks also to our community who have been ever generous with upcycling donations. We truly appreciate your support!
What else is Coming Up?
Monthly Character Strength: Open Minded
For the month of March, our character strength focus is open minded. At ASM, being open minded means staying curious, considering different perspectives, and being willing to have your thinking challenged and changed. In our classrooms, this shows up: in the questions students ask during inquiry, in how they listen to a classmate who sees things differently, and in the willingness to say "I hadn't thought of it that way."
Students who demonstrate this strength will have their names entered into a drawing at our next assembly for a chance to have lunch with Ms. Dani. We invite families to talk with their children at home about what it looks and feels like to be open minded, whether trying a new approach to a problem, listening with genuine curiosity, or being open enough to change their mind.
