In writing, we continued our work on How-To books. We have been reading our books to friends and helping one another by asking questions to help add details and any steps we have missed!
In math, our kindergarteners have been learning about addition. They have been using manipulatives to add and are learning about writing addition equations.
Our first graders have continued to learn about subtraction facts and strategies to use and are about to start a unit on geometry.
Our second grade has been learning about addition strategies for numbers to 100 and we are about to begin learning about subtraction strategies for numbers to 100.
This week, we continued our nonfiction reading by practicing retelling, but stating the main idea and using details to support the main idea. We then all chose a book to read and we wrote the main idea and details of our books!
A few photos from our reading workshop this week:
With the chilly day, we started Maine Outdoor School inside. We conducted an experiment to see why trees survive the winter. We used three cups of water: one had just water, one with sugar, and one with salt. We then set them outside. We learned that the salt water and sugar water do not freeze as fast. Our trees have sugar in their water, so it helps them survive!
We then braved the cold for a bit and learned about identifying deciduous and evergreen trees. We finished class by coming back into the warm classroom and doing detailed drawings of birds, insects, and animal eyes!
Friday afternoon, we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We read the book Martin's Big Words. We learned how he worked peacefully to make the world a better place. We then drew and wrote our dreams of how we could make the world a better place.
