Curriculum Design: Sequencing and Progression

Our English Curriculum is designed in such a way that children are able to build on their prior learning. Key genres are revisited to enable children to build up an understanding of features and vocabulary. Core grammar, spelling and punctuation are revised each year to enable a solid understanding. Children's knowledge of grammar, punctuation, spelling and composition is built upon throughout each year and across the year groups.

How English is Taught at St James the Great Academy

To ensure children are fully immersed in their learning, we teach reading and writing through a single high quality book. This allows children to make links between skills for both these key areas of learning.

In the Early Years, children progress through the different stages of early writing through a variety of adult-led and child initiated mark making activities within the continuous provision and carpet input sessions. Children will progress from initial mark making activities towards the application of their phonics knowledge in purposeful writing activities, such as writing letters, recording recipes in the mud kitchen or making design plans and instructions in the Construction area. By the end of Reception, children will be writing short sentences with words with known sound-letter correspondence and components of correct sentence structure.

Year 1 and Year 2 children have daily, 40 minute writing lessons in addition to their Read Write Inc phonics and reading lesson. Children in Years 3 to 6 access a daily 40 minute reading lesson, a 40 minute writing lesson and a 10 minute Grammar and Punctuation session. Lessons are  designed and sequenced to enable progression of compositional and transcription skills.

Each new unit begins with immersing children into the new story and allowing them to identify the key features they will need to replicate. The writing curriculum map is designed in such a way that children are able to build on their prior learning. Key genres are revisited to enable children to build up an understanding of features and vocabulary. Core grammar, spelling and punctuation are revised each year to enable a solid understanding.

Within each lesson, there is dedicated time in which the children secure their grammar, punctuation and spelling skills. By the end of KS2, children will be secondary-ready. They will be independently able to apply their compositional, grammatical, spelling and punctuation learning to a variety of text types. They will be confident in reflectively and purposefully editing and improving their own writing. Children have been exposed to a variety of high-quality literature and are able to apply their understanding of reading skills to understand these. They will be able to discuss their own literary preferences and opinions.

Reading for Pleasure

At St James the Great Academy we want our children to value and enjoy reading. This is why every child in school will have 2 books they are able to read indapendently. The first will be a book which is matched to their reading ability - this could be a Read Write Inc phonics book, a Fresh Start intervention book or an Accelerated Reader book within their individual point range. Each half term children are assessed and their levels or points adjusted accordingly.

The second book children can access is a Reading for Pleasure book. They have the freedom to select any book they like, from any genre promoting children's enjoyment and opinions on dfifrerent authors and book styles. We have developed a reading nook within our school environment, which children have access to continually.
