PSHE Statement of Intent:
At St Helen’s, we provide all children with an ambitious, purposeful, relevant and inclusive curriculum. This provides children with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to effectively navigate the complexities of life in the 21st century. Our curriculum is underpinned by British Values and promotes pupils’ spiritual, moral and cultural development.
Implementation
Teachers teach PSHE 1 x a week for approximately 30 minutes or 1 x every 2 weeks for 60 minutes
All PSHE lessons follow the PSHE national curriculum which is progressive and knowledge rich
The content of the lessons are driven and resourced by Kapow, which has been adapted to suit the needs of our pupils
All lessons are vocabulary focused and working walls are used where appropriate to display vocabulary to enhance learning
Knowledge and content expectations are the same for all children but lessons are scaffolded to allow access and challenge for all
Regular knowledge checks and retrieval quizzes allow children to recall and retain key knowledge
End of unit assessments allow data driven decisions when planning further content or coverage
Subject specific books are available to enrich children’s experiences further
Enrichment day and events support further coverage and exposure to key topics
Impact
At St Helen’s Primary Academy, all children will understand the importance of PSHE, RE, SMSC and British Values. The impact of this will be measured through pupil voice and floor book collections. We teach pupils to stay safe and healthy and support them to build self-esteem, resilience and empathy. We use our PSHE curriculum to tackle barriers to learning and have high aspirations to improve their life chances. Skills and attributes gained through our hiqh quality curriculum are used to increase academic attainment and attendance. By the time our pupils leave our academy, we provide them with the knowledge and understanding to become responsible members of society.
