Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)
MFL Statement of Intent:
"To develop creative and confident communication within another language, understanding and responding verbally and in written form, with increasing fluency and ambition."
At St Helen's Primary Academy, we aim to give the children in our care as wide a range of opportunities and experiences as possible.
We acknowledge the influence Europe has on our lives and as the UK is becoming an increasingly multicultural society, we have a duty to provide our children with an understanding of other cultures and languages. Learning a language enriches the curriculum, providing excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children and teachers, helping to create enthusiastic learners and to develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life.
The natural links between languages and other areas of the curriculum can enhance the overall teaching and learning experience. The skills, knowledge and understanding gained make a major contribution to the development of children’s oracy and literacy and to their understanding of their own culture and those of others.
Language also lies at the heart of ideas about individual identity and community, and learning another language can do a great deal to shape children’s ideas in this critical area as well as giving them a new perspective on their own language.
Implementation
MFL is taught weekly in both KS1 and KS2
The MFL curriculum is taught using AET centralised resourced resources
Lessons have a focus on retrieval of previous knowledge to ensure children are remembering
Whole class capture of work is completed online
Individual assessment is captured online using knowledge and AFL to inform judgements
MFL enrichment day is planned in the enrichment day schedule to allow for further exposure to culture and language
Impact
Pupils will be exposed to a variety of languages in KS1 to promote a wide range of opportunities and experiences. In KS2, pupils will then specialise in Spanish.
Pupils will develop their ability to:
Speak orally in a different language
Read and write in a different language
At St Helen's Primary Academy, we believe that children enjoy learning to speak another language. We also believe that the earlier a child is exposed to a foreign language, the faster the language in question is acquired. It is widely understood that the early acquisition of a foreign language facilitates the learning of other foreign languages later in life.
To assess progress against this, we use assessment methods to check on long term memory retention. The data we collect from this informs planning of future content and coverage.
Assessment
Micro level - Formative assessment (Task by task)
Ongoing AFL during lessons through:
- Eliciting information through questioning and dialogue
- Providing feedback with clear direction on how to improve
- Helping children to understand how to become successful (criteria)
Meso level - Lesson by lesson assessment
- Knowledge checks at the start of the lesson to ensure children are remembering more content and vocabulary over time
- ‘Do now’ retrieval quizzes at the start of every lesson to recall key content and vocabulary from previous lesson
Macro level - End of unit
-End of unit assessment based around content and knowledge taught throughout the unit.
-Data analysis to inform future planning and coverage.
Mega level - Standardised test
No Standardised tests are in place for the MFL Curriculum
