Year 11 & 13 Raising Standards
- Christine Gregoire
Our ambition is to inspire our students to see learning as a lifelong journey. We want them to all push their limits to achieve the best possible outcomes both in terms of qualifications, but also in terms of being the best person they can be in their future lives by developing into big-hearted individuals, who show kindness to each other. We want them to understand the possibilities that they have out in the wider world and not allow their ambitions to be constrained by what they perceive to be their opportunities when they join us at the beginning of their journey. We want to do this through inspiring them to question what they know and understand, what they think and what others tell them. We want them to realise that the world is full of big questions; to discover that anything is possible.
The Aylward Way is how we do things here, every day. Our vision is clear: This community inspires a love of learning and enables alumni to lead long, happy, and successful lives that leave a positive legacy. Our mission is simple but ambitious: to give every child an excellent education, in every classroom, every day.
We live by four core values: Excellence, Integrity, Kindness, and Self-Control. These values guide everything we do and are lived through our Aylward Artifacts. From line ups and silent transitions from line up, being ready to learn, wearing our uniform with pride to celebrating our students daily with public positive recognition. We drive our culture through our routines that help our lessons be disruption free and foster a love of learning. We are Inspired by the best ideas in leadership and believe great schools grow from strong cultures.
At Aylward, culture isn’t just what we do—it’s who we are. It’s a promise from staff, students, and families to work together, do the right thing, and always try to be better. As Peps McCrea says, “great teaching comes from great culture” and at Aylward, culture is everything.
We want to be unusually brave and we commit to being big hearted. We chose to treat each other with kindness, warmth and care believing that everybody matters and believing in one another. The values of the School today are underpinned by the Aylward Attributes staff and students are encouraged to demonstrate
Kindness - we show care through our standards, our actions and words, supporting others to be better.
Self Control – we value ourselves and others considering our actions and words to select the right course of action.
Integrity – we do the right thing, when it is hard and no one is looking. The journey is just as important as the outcome.
Excellence – we work on being the best we can be. We reflect, and focus on what makes the difference.
At Aylward Academy we are dedicated to promoting values which ensure that students develop a strong sense of social and moral responsibility. We prepare students for life in modern Britain because values such as individual liberty, democracy, the law, mutual respect and tolerance are embedded within the curriculum and the Aylward Academy ethos. In addition these values are promoted throughout the school year.
As school leaders, we are responsible for providing a curriculum which:
Is broad and balanced, compliant with legislation and provides a wide range of subjects which prepare students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life in modern Britain.
Actively promotes the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance.
Promotes tolerance of and respect for people of all faiths (or none), cultures and lifestyles through effective spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils, including by engaging pupils in extracurricular activities.
Is supported by a well-rounded programme of assemblies which offer clear guidance on what is right and wrong.
We endeavour that students:
Are reflective about their own beliefs and perspective on life, and the extent to which they are the same as/different to others’ faith, feelings and values.
Show an interest in investigating and offering reasoned views about moral and ethical issues, and appreciate the viewpoint of others.
Have a sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about the world around them and participate actively in artistic, sporting or cultural activities.
Recognise the difference between right and wrong, understand that actions have consequences, and apply this in their own lives by respecting the law.
Co-operate well, celebrate diversity and resolve conflicts effectively.
Engage positively with life in a democracy.
Understand and appreciate the history, heritage and wide ranging cultural influences that underpin our individual and shared experiences of life in modern Britain.
We believe that we allow students to recognise right from wrong, resolve conflicts, understand and explore diversity, develop a moral code, understand others’ beliefs and understand how communities function. These qualities will allow them to participate fully in life in modern Britain.
