Phonics

“The beautiful thing about learning to read is that no one can take it away from you” B.B. King.

At Anglesey we promote the love of reading in many ways, the ‘road to reading’ starts early on in a child’s education with bedtime stories. Phonics is recommended as the first strategy that children should be taught in helping them to learn to read. Phonics is the teaching of sounds (phonemes). At Anglesey, we follow the Read Write Inc phonics scheme for teaching phonics.

In Nursery we follow Stage 1 to develop children's speaking and listening skills and this lays the foundations for the phonic work which starts in Stage 2. For those children that will be going to Reception the following academic year, they begin Stage 2 in the spring term in Nursery . In Reception and Year 1 children have a daily phonics lesson.

Our Aims

Home Learning

Reading is an integral part of developing a love of reading.  All children in Reception and KS1 will have books matched to their phonics phase of learning, which they should be able to read to you. In addition, they will bring home a library book, which they have individually selected and is for you to share and read to them. At home, enjoy reading to your child and listening to them read too.  Take time to enjoy books together at home or when visiting the library. Books, magazines, looking in catalogues, following recipes, reading instructions for a game - these are all great opportunities to share reading together at home.

Specific phonics homework may be given out for children by their phonics teacher. As well as this formal home learning, please visit the phonics play website which has lots of great phonics games and activities. If you are unsure of the phonic phase your child is currently working within, please  check your child's home reading book label or speak to their class teacher.
