Greek: Themes in the Modern World • i²Flex

Full Year / 1 Credit

Prerequisite:

Successful completion of Greek 8, teacher consultation, and/or placement test for those new to the program.

Course Description:

This course is exclusively offered as an i2Flex course to seniors who have successfully completed Greek 8. Greek: Themes in the Modern World i2Flex is a blended learning program offered separately from the regular school day schedule. The course is open only to seniors who are enrolled in another Modern Language class during the regular school day, but who also wish to have instruction in Greek language and literature.

In this course, students examine contemporary global issues through the study of literary and non-literary texts and are led to comparisons that underline the importance of these themes in modern society. Emphasis is on strengthening the students’ knowledge of the Greek language and culture through systematic practice of writing and speaking skills. Students are taught to use the prewriting process of brainstorming ideas, drafting and revising. They are encouraged to use their critical thinking in order to analyze the themes and compose their own piece of writing. They are taught to understand the focus of the topic and to develop and organize their ideas, using a wide variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures. Through reading, students learn how to appreciate the text by understanding the meaning of it, and by comparing and contrasting various issues. The course Greek: Themes in the Modern World i2Flex includes two face-to-face meetings per month.

Required assessment includes at least two in-class assessments per semester (tests, quizzes, etc.) and a semester exam.
