Prerequisites:

Successful completion of Chinese Language Arts 8, teacher recommendation and/or placement test. Placement in the Honors section of this course requires: Completion of all assigned honors summer work; Teacher recommendation based on Q1 performance and grade (minimum B+ and above). Honors placement is finalized after Q1.

Course Description:

This course is offered to native or near-native speakers of the Chinese language. It is a literature and language course that promotes an appreciation of the richness of the Chinese language. Writing, reading, listening and speaking skills are developed in order to prepare students to continue in the Language A Program.Students are introduced to a variety of texts, including novels, poetry, articles and history. Through the study of these texts students will enrich their vocabularies and their understanding of grammatical structure, as well as develop skills in literary analysis. The major assignments in the course are based on literary analysis, essay writing and oral presentations. Literature studied in the course is selected from works of the following authors: Yu Hua and Louisa May Alcott.

Students taking this course for Honors credit will be required to complete supplemental assignments and will be assessed with an Honors-level rubric.
