Heart of Mathematics

Course offered in alternate years.

Prerequisite:

Successful completion of two years of mathematics

Description:

This is a course for 11th and 12th grade students. A common answer given by professional mathematicians when describing their subject is that Mathematics is beautiful and that it is everywhere! But this is hardly the view taken by students. This course is designed to illustrate through projects, research and group work that Mathematics is indeed beautiful and Mathematics can be found everywhere. Students shall acquire a better understanding and appreciation for Mathematics, as well as develop reasoning and critical thinking. The topics covered in this course include riddles that evoke techniques of effective thinking, numerical patterns, the Fibonacci sequence and its properties, number sets (natural, integers, rational, irrational, real, odd, even and prime numbers), cryptography, types of infinity, geometric gems, the golden section, the fourth dimension, fractals and chaos, recursion, Feigenbaum’s number, elementary topology, and the theory of special relativity, probability and large data.
