Policy for Translation sites

The HMS World Languages Department is committed to helping students become clear and effective communicators, creative problem solvers, self-directed learners, and informed thinkers in French and or Spanish.

In order to achieve these goals, students must learn to make intelligent observations and choices about language learning. They must practice higher-level thinking skills in making these observation and choices. In short, they must learn to use their minds well.

Students should be aware that no language translators can take the place of thoughtful writing in the target language. Such translations are often inaccurate and difficult to comprehend. Students should also know that the use of these translators would be READILY APPARENT to their world language teacher. Using a language translator IS CHEATING and will be subject to the consequences outlined in the student handbook.

Language translators SHOULD NOT be used as dictionaries, as they give little or no information about the word or phrase being defined.

Furthermore, HMS world languages teachers believe that learning to use a dictionary effectively is an important skill, which will help students in their role as lifelong learners.

SUMMARY:

* The use of language translators impedes the cognitive process and is therefore an inappropriate use

of technology at HMS.

*Any use of a language translator for schoolwork IS CHEATING and will be subject to the

consequences outlined in the student handbook.

*Students having difficulty reading or writing in the target language are STRONGLY encouraged to

seek help from their teacher.
