Homework and Re-Take Guidelines

7th and 8th grade World Language Homework and Re-Take Guidelines

GUIDELINES FOR HOMEWORK:

Students are expected to spend a minimum of 10-15 minutes a night on HW. If there is no written work assigned, then students are required to use that time to study the spelling and meaning of their new vocabulary words and phrases. There is never "I have no HW in a language class!"

HW in language classes is to practice the written form of the language. It is often used as a study guide for vocabulary and grammar assessments for the unit of study.

If students do not complete their HW:

I do take into consideration the individual student.

Is this the first time the student did not do the HW within a trimester?

I do ask the student why the HW was not done. (I understand that sometimes circumstances out of their control

may come up.)

If the student left it at home, he / she needs to have a parent sign the completed HW and turn it in the next class.

Consequences:

Student may just be given a warning, but it is recorded to see if there is a pattern.

Student stays after school with the language teacher.

Students are still required do the HW, whether they work on it in class (if they were absent) or when they stay after school.

GUIDELINES FOR RE-TAKING ASSESSMENTS:

Learning a new language requires students to work on several skills that are dependent on one another. Two areas in which students have to spend additional time outside of the classroom include Vocabulary and Grammar:

Vocabulary: Students need to memorize the meaning and spelling for a select group of words and phrases

connected to a unit of study.

Grammar: Students need to know how to apply grammar concepts for a unit of study in order to write correctly

in the target language.

Students are always given advance notice for the dates and expectations for assessments. The dates will be posted on the board and on my calendar. Students are required to write down the dates and expectations. Sometimes students may not do their best work, so the language teachers at HMS developed these guidelines which apply only to quizzes in Vocabulary and Grammar:

1. Everyone may re-take Vocabulary and or Grammar quizzes up to a grade of 85 (B-) because these

two areas are the foundations upon which the skills of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking on based.

2. The higher grade will be posted in PowerSchool with a note indicating that the student either retook the quiz or

chose not to re-take it.

Students are allowed only one re-take per quiz.

3. The re-take must be taken a within the deadline set by the teacher. 4. It is the student’s responsibility to remember to keep the appointment.

5. Make-up times are:

7:30-7:55 Before school

2:00-2:45 Study hall (Students may NOT skip their scheduled band or chorus time for re-takes)

2:45-3:15 After school
