It is hard to believe that we are on the downhill to the end of the year and Christmas. It has certainly been an action packed week for all of us at Stonefields School.
Thank you to everyone who joined us on Tuesday morning for the official opening of our new building. It was a wonderful morning filled with bubbles, balloons and much more.
If you were unable to make it, you can watch the video of the event here.
Wow, what an amazing Film Festival! Thank you to everyone involved, especially our learners. We got such fantastic feedback about how respectful Stonefields School was on our trip to Sylvia Park! Well done to all our fabulous presenters who were truly representing our school value of Bringing our Best together. Make sure to check out our innovative movies at the following link.
As technology has become more prevalent in society even our preschool children are increasingly adept at using tablet and smart phone technology and are increasingly fluent and demanding (of what technology can do) at a younger age. A decade ago we thought Year 5 was the entry point for a keyboard and increased digital capacity. Now year 3 children are more than competent digitally and are looking for ways to seek knowledge.
As a school, we have made a decision to move to Chromebooks for Years 3-8. Some of the important motivators to our decision are:
Chromebooks connect young learners in a way that gives them powerful opportunities to collaborate with their peers and to manage their learning. Advances in the ease of access to the learning environment and applications platforms make this device the one we now identify as the best fit for empowering this cohort.
iPads will continue to be used in sets of 20 throughout the school.
Further information will be sent in the coming weeks, including how to purchase a Chromebook for 2021.
This Saturday is Diwali and Sunday is the new year. If your child would like to wear their Indian costume to school on Monday, 16th November, they are more than welcome to do so to continue the Diwali celebrations.
Stonefields School is committed to the health and safety of your child and we use a number of methods to emphasise the importance of wearing a sun hat and being SunSmart.
Hats are compulsory in Term 1 and 4 and by wearing a hat every day at school, your child will have a much lower risk of developing skin cancer in the future. One of the best things we can do to help reinforce these sun protection habits is to be a role model. By ‘walking the sun protection talk’, not only will you be protecting yourself from harmful UV radiation, you will also be helping your child develop good sun protection habits for life.
As a school, we are committed to showing learners how to be SunSmart through our own role modelling in the school environment, to help normalise being SunSmart behaviours and to help ingrain the habit.
Likewise, your choice to role model good sun protection at home will reinforce what they are learning at school. For a child to see you demonstrate being SunSmart will encourage them to do the same when they are out and about outside of school hours.
A handy tip is to keep a broad-brimmed hat and sunscreen in your bag, car or at the door, ready to grab whenever you head outside.
School hats can be purchased from the office, the cost is $12.50 - EFTPOS is available.
Thank you for your support.

Well done to our boys and girls touch teams who had an awesome day at the Tamaki touch tournament last week. As the Year 6 event was round robin and we tied in the Year 5 final we are still waiting for the final results from the organiser but are very proud of our teams performances.
Aarusha and Ranuki recently competed in the National Karate Cup 2020, achieving some amazing results!
Aarusha placed 1st in the 6-7 years girls kumite, second in kata and third in the team kumite. Ranuki placed second in the 8-9 years girls kumite and third in the team kumite.
Kai pai, we are very proud of you!
Please ensure all Stonefields School library books are returned to the library by Friday 27th November.
The library will be closed from Monday 30th November until school finishes for the year.
As we encourage children to self-issue/return their own library books, mistakes do happen. For example, books may not be scanned back into the library correctly, books may be put directly on the shelf rather than being scanned back, library books may have accidentally been returned to the hub library or the public library by mistake, or books may have been issued to the wrong person. Please remind your children to return their library books to the "big red returns box" inside the door of the library by Friday 27th November. If in the next few weeks you receive a reminder notice for a book that you are certain your child has already returned, or they never had on issue, please email anna.malan@stonefields.school.nz or call into the library on a Wednesday or Thursday to talk with Anna.
