College LGBT+ Officer, Leo, was voted as a finalist for a Queer Student Award
Leo, the Students' Union's LGBT+ Officer and media make-up student, was nominated for the 'LGBT+ Youth Role Model of the Year' award at the national Queer Students Awards. They were then shortlisted as a finalist and got to attend the prestigious ceremony in Manchester on 14th June. We caught up with Leo to chat about their experience...
How did you find out you had been nominated and then shortlisted?
"College emailed me saying I had been nominated for a Queer Students Award and I was ecstatic so immediately I looked up what they were. I found their Instagram and followed them for updates, which then led me to find out I had been shortlisted. I was so excited and so happy and proud that I had gotten to that point."
What was the awards ceremony like?
"When we got there, there was a lot of cars and it was difficult to find somewhere to park, but that's a good thing because it meant that it was going to be a really good night full of amazing, inspiring people! I truly was inspired by everyone there. The College principal also attended, some sponsors, and the finalists for the awards. The atmosphere was very welcoming and full of excitement and nerves."
As you are running for Students' Union President for next year, what are you hoping to do if you are elected?
"My plans for president next year if I'm voted in, will be working more closely with students and staff on various charities and fundraisers, as well as clubs and social events. I want to continue the work I have done this year as LGBT+ Officer too."
The election for next year's SU President is currently open, so make sure you vote! More information, manifestos and the voting form can be found here
