Students enjoying College's 'Start Up' programme
'Start Up' is a free programme available to students who are interested in setting up their own businesses. There are two cohorts of students each year, with the next ones starting Monday 27th March. This is a ten-week programme with sessions from industry professionals, and is designed to be done alongside your course.
We had a chat to some of the students from the first cohort this year, with business ideas ranging from lint removal service to designing and selling prints, and here's what they had to say...
A favourite among a few of the students has been the Business Finance session they did with Richard from Purple Shoots, which involved a adapted version of the game Monopoly, to help them understand the complexities and challenges of business finance. Joshua said this was also really fun as he won the game, but others spoke about how it made the topic more accessible by breaking down the different parts of finance.
Idrees, an Access to Humanities student, said: "I had an idea about setting up a bar when I began StartUp, but no idea about the ins and outs of how to do it. After a few sessions, my idea has changed and developed, based on what I have learned about setting up a business. I now want to create my own artwork and posters and sell them, as I used to study art and design."
Mahnaz has been enjoying how interactive the sessions are, and how they help you to build on your ideas and leanr new things. Josh also highlighted that it's an 'open environment' for discussion and networking.
As Joshua told us, "Even if you just have a slight idea of something you might want to do, come to Start Up and see what you will learn!"
So why not sign up for the next cohort (running 27th March to 26th June) by clicking the button below?!
New helpline available for The Sheffield College students
If you are in College and you need emotional or personal help, your Personal Tutor, Student Mentor or member of delivery team will be there to do that.
However, problems and worries often happen outside of college times. This is why the Sheffield College has launched the Student Assistance Programme. This is an external agency that offers a 24/7 helpline of support. All phone calls are answered by trained Councillors who are able to guide, support and signpost. The leaflet also has the number included.
Health Assured have a fantastic App called 'My Health Advantage' which as a Sheffield College student you can download. There are lots of: podcasts, fitness advice, and well-being tips. There are instructions on how to download the App and the unique code you will need in the SHAPE Your Future Google classroom. If you can't find this, ask your tutor.

Currently they are taking donations to S6 Foodbank to support the local community but are hoping to expand as the scheme goes on.
It's been great to see so many donations, please keep donating if you can!
Academic Support for HE students at the College
"Hi, I’m Martin, the Personal Tutor for Higher Education. I’m here to support students from all courses at levels 4 to 6, and I do this through in-class presentations, 1:1 support sessions, and assignment feedback.
Do you find yourself struggling with a particular aspect of your studies, such as academic writing, organising your time, presentation skills, or research? If so, you can book an appointment with me to discuss different ways of improving in whichever area you choose. I’m based at Hillsborough but am available via Google Meet as well; just give me a few days’ notice so we can find a timeslot which works.
You’re also welcome to email me an assignment draft for some comments and suggestions: martin.flynn@sheffcol.ac.uk. Please include the assignment brief and deadline with this too, so I know what you’re working towards.
Lastly, if you and your classmates are all struggling with the same academic skill (e.g. referencing, or spelling, punctuation, and grammar) you can ask your class tutor to book me for an in-class activity on your chosen topic.
If you’re unsure whether I’m the right person to support you, drop me an email and if necessary I can signpost to someone who is better positioned. All the best."
