Students meet with local Sheffield MP to celebrate Colleges Week
Colleges' Week celebrates all things Colleges - marked by the hashtag #LoveOurColleges - and this year it ran 17th-21st October.
On the Friday of Colleges' Week, local MP for Sheffield Central, Paul Blomfield came in to have breakfast with and chat to some of our students about issues that mattered to them.
It was a great morning, with students asking questions around a wide variety of topics; from wheelchair accessibility in the city centre, to immigration process reform, to funding for mental health services, to the possibility of the voting age being lowered to include 16 and 17 year olds.
It was amazing to hear Paul's views and opinions on these varying topics, as well as students' personal and lived experiences.
Massive thank you to Paul for coming in, but most importantly to the students who attended, for bringing such insightful, meaningful and well thought-out questions and discussions to the session. We hope you enjoyed it!
The Sheffield College to launch new record label 'FiveBySeven'
Music industry professionals are launching a new record label at The Sheffield College to support emerging talent in the city. FiveBySeven is the brainchild of curriculum staff in the music department at the College’s Hillsborough Campus who teach alongside working in the industry.
The new label aims to become a launchpad for upcoming musical talent at the College as well as across the city, which is famed for its rich musical heritage.
FiveBySeven’s name is a nod to Sheffield’s five rivers and seven hills. It is anticipated that the first artists will be signed by April 2023.
FiveBySeven was officially unveiled at a launch party at the Leadmill music venue and nightclub, on Tuesday, October 18th.
All of the performances at the launch party were from current and former The Sheffield College music students including Alice Ede, Jungle Lion, Lunarca and Captain Avery and the Cosmic Triceratops of Intergalactic Peace.
We can't wait to see what everyone in this project gets up to in the near future!
