This year's LGBT Officer prepares to play in concerts in Europe this summer
The Student's Union LGBT Officer and Access to Nursing student, Alistair, is excited to play in numerous Orchestra concerts this summer.
Alistair is playing 3 concerts in Germany this summer as part of the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra. The day before he heads to Germany, he will attending a summer residential with the Derby and Derbyshire City and County Youth Orchestra. He is then, at the end of August, going to play in a concert with Dark Peak Music in Spain!
As you can imagine, he is very busy, but we got to have a chat with him about this incredible opportunity...
How did you get involved in the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra?
"I have been playing tuba for the past 12 years and, I joined as my best friend/flatmate plays viola in the orchestra."
What do you enjoy most about being in Orchestras?
"Music is self-care for me, it's a form of escapism and there's nothing like it!"
What are you most excited about for the tour?
"Playing amazing music with fellow talented musicians and socialising more with like-minded people - this is a huge honour and I’m so excited to be given this fantastic opportunity!"
Best of luck to Alistair with all of his upcoming concerts!
Students supporting Cancer Research UK
Rafaqat Riaz, an ESOL student at the College has been doing some incredible fundraising for Cancer Research UK.
In the month of March she took part in 'Walk all over Cancer 2022', where she walked 10,000 steps everyday to raise money for the charity. She was sponsored and got people she knew to donate - absolutely smashing her target amount raised.
She is continuing fundraising activities for this worthwhile cause, and you can find her fundraising page here: https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/rafi-helping-hand-save-life
The Student's Union Fundraising Club have also being raising money for Cancer Research UK recently as well - if you want to get involved, drop us an email at the address below!
