Trainee Chefs from College win National competition 'Zest Quest Asia'
A team of trainee chefs from College have won the national 'Zest Quest Asia' cooking competition. Jack Hayes, Max Heath and Rhiannon Siddall - all students at the College - beat students from five other colleges in a live cook-off to become the 2022 champions.
They were announced as winners at the Zest Quest Asia 2022 Gala Dinner and Awards Nights on 8th April at the Hilton London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5, following the cook-off earlier in the day. The competition recognises outstanding talent, knowledge and understanding of Asian cuisine. Last year, The Sheffield College’s Oliver Herrington won the virtual spin-off of the competition during the pandemic.
An educational and cultural trip of a lifetime awaits this year’s overall winners. To date, Zest Quest Asia champions have experienced the sights, sounds and tastes of Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand.
Max, one of the winners, spoke about the experience, saying; "I applied for the competition in hopes of gaining some valuable experience in competing as well as enjoying planning a menu with the team and learning more about Asian cuisine. The experience of being part of the competition has been brilliant, I have had an amazing time all the way through from planning the menu, doing research and then on to the finals. I think I speak for all of us when I say that we were over the moon when we found out we had won, it honestly feels like all the hard work has been worth it. ”
A massive congratulations to the team for all the work they put in to win the competition, and we look forward to what they do in the future!
Fundraising Events for Comic Relief and Ukrainian Humanitarian Appeals
Before the Easter Holidays, students hosted various fundraising activities to raise money for Comic Relief and the Ukrainian Humanitarian Appeals.
Health and Social Care students hosted 'The Sheffield College’s Got Talent' at City Campus. We saw some amazing displays of talents from students; actors, musicians, singers, dancers and back-flippers. Just over £400 was raised for Comic Relief and to support the refugees from Ukraine, and great fun was had by everyone!
The Inclusion Team have also been raising money for the Ukrainian Humanitarian Appeal by hosting a Grand Easter Extravaganza at City Campus. Over at Peaks, they have been collecting essential items to donate to a bigger, local appeal.
This is wonderful display of generosity in a time of concern and uncertainty, and truly makes us proud to be a part of The Sheffield College.
Massive thanks to everyone involved in these fundraising activities - the money raised will truly be appreciated by the individuals supported by these charities!
Sports Coaching Students run a Children's Multi-Sport Holiday Club over Easter Holidays
Sports Coaching Foundation Degree Students at the College hosted The Sheffield College's Multi-sports Holiday Club at Hillsborough Campus over the Easter break.
The holiday sports club was open to all children and young people aged 8 to 14 years old, and allowed children to experience new sports, learn skills, meet new people and most importantly, have fun.
This gave the students an incredible work experience opportunity to organise and run events for children and we have heard great things from all involved. Congratulations all!
National Awards for College Basketball Players
Some of the brilliantly talented basketball players at College have been recognised in a national awards scheme. Three students have received Individuals Honours for 2021/22 in the Women’s Elite Academy Basketball League (WEABL) and the Elite Academy Basketball League (EABL).
In partnership with Association of College's Sport and Basketball England, the WEABL and EABL offer the highest level of college and school competition in the country.
The 2021/2022 Sheffield College award winners are:
Abbey Whitehouse - WEABL North Most Valuable Player award
Jasmine Graham - Most Improved Player award
Declan Kom - EABL Under 17 Player of the Year award
Abbey, said: “I am grateful to receive this award and the opportunity to play this year with a wonderful group of girls.”
Jasmine, said: “I feel very privileged to have won the award and it’s great to get recognition for the hard work I have put in this season. The thing I love most about basketball is the competition. Being on a basketball court there is always motivation to compete and work hard and when in close game situations the ‘hype’ surrounding the game is thrilling.”
She added: “I’m enjoying the social aspect of college, I have met so many new people. This season has brought new teammates. Being able to bond so well and seeing them get better as the season has unfolded has been a great experience. My long term career goal is to, hopefully, go professional in Europe.”
Declan, added: “Winning this award is a great achievement that I will take pride in for years to come. It is also something that I am hoping to build on. Wherever I am playing basketball is where I am most myself - it is what makes me who I am.”
He added: “My time at college has been enjoyable mostly because of the support staff have shown me on and off the court and the freedom I have been given to pursue my dream. In the long term, I would love to be a professional in this sport at a high level so that I’m in a position to have a positive impact on the world.”
Will Hopper, staff member at College, was also awarded Women's Elite Academy Basketball League North Coach of the Year, and the College has been chosen by Basketball England, to be part of the England Development Programme for basketball in Yorkshire.
The biggest Congratulations to the winners, and all those who are part of basketball at the College!
