Great Depression + New Deal Scrapbook

Goal:

• Create a Google Slides scrapbook explaining the Great Depression and the New Deal
  • You will be using primary documents from
    • American Memory Collection contained in the Library of Congress online digital collections.

Product:

• Your scrapbook will contain four main sections.
• Each section will illustrate a different aspect of the Great Depression and the New Deal.

  • Photograph Section
  • Program Section

Steps:

1. Create a Title Page
   1. Use a photograph or some other visual primary source from the time period
   2. Include your name and class period
2. Section 1: Background Information
   1. Great Depression:
      1. Go to http://www.history.com/topics/new-deal:
         • 1) When did the Great Depression begin?
         • 2) What was the name of the event that sparked it?
         • 3) In what year did Roosevelt take office?
         • 4) According to Roosevelt at his inaugural address, what was the only thing we have to fear?

        • 5) Name 4 things people are waiting in line for
        • 6) Before the state and federal governments provided assistance, who was providing relief to Americans?
        • 7) A subsistence level is the bare minimum of basic needs that a family requires to survive. What percentage of American families was living below this level?
   2. New Deal:

         • 8) What did Roosevelt do concerning banks the day after he took office?
         • 9) What was the purpose of the “Emergency Banking Act” which was passed March 9, 1933?

         • 12) What group benefitted most from the National Youth Administration and what did it do?

         • 14) What types of foods are missing from the list?
         • 15) How does the CCC menu compare with what people eat today?

         • 16) Under 1929-1932 how many banks failed?
      5. Using Google Answer
         • 17) What was the “Black Blizzard” and when did it happen?
         • 18) What were “penny auctions” and why were they made illegal?
3. Section 2: Primary Documents
   • Read two documents dealing with the Great Depression/New Deal.
     • Include on each Document slide:
       • a. A quote from each of the two documents that you read should be cut and pasted into your PowerPoint.
       • b. A summary of the work on the same slide describing the contents of the document.
       • c. Explain how the document relates to the Great Depression/New Deal.
