**** Undergraduate Researchers
1-2 positions: all year long. one filled. one upcoming.
I encourage you to apply through the department undergraduate research program
Funded by research projects: We have year-around opportunities for undergraduate students through project funding. But you need to approach me before a new semester starts. For example, for summer opportunities, approach me in March and April.
**** Self-funded students
International students who want to visit NCSU in summer on B-2 visa (Not allowed): I have students checking with me about whether or not they can visit NCSU and my team in summer and whether or not they can be involved in some research project. Here is a summary from the answer I received from our OIS: B-2 visas are visitor visas, and you do not have work authorization. I can host you for a visit so you can see what NCSU is like, but it should not be an extended visit or one in which you can perform any sort of work. It is not recommended that you change status from a B1/B2 to a J-1 within the U.S. If you elect to pursue a J-1 visa, it is best for you to return to your home country to apply for the J-1. The process to change from B1/B2 to J-1 within the U.S. is very difficult and time-consuming. OIS has seen change of status applications take more than a year to process, and after the potential scholar submits his/her change of status application, he/she would need to maintain his/her B1/B2 status and stay in the U.S. until the office of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) decides whether they will grant him/her a J-1 visa or not. If the individual wants to pursue a change of status within the U.S., then it's recommended that they get in contact with an immigration attorney as soon as possible. )
International students funded by government with F-1 visa: Depending on availability of projects. Most of our projects have non-disclosure agreement. Therefore, we usually won't hire non-NCSU students.
