Step 1: File the Invention Disclosure Report
Before you submit a paper make sure you understand that a patent can no longer be filed 1 year after you publish the paper in US. In European countries, once the paper is published you can no longer file a patent.
You need to file Invention Disclosure first.
Go to website: Invention Disclosure Report
Select "Create and Edit Disclosures"
Follow the instructions
Make sure you know who are to be included as inventors and make sure you know their contact information.
Make sure you know the project ID.
As me for a previous IDR so you can save some time on preparing it.
Attach all the relevant documentation (PPT, papers, figures, flowcharts).
Before submission, please stop by my office and we will go over each items before you submit.
After submission, send emails to the co-inventors so that they can sign it off as soon as possible.
Step 2: Talk with the lawyer in University OTT to Confirm the IDR
Step 3: Meet with our sponsors to clarify their questions
Step 4: Review the Patent Applications
Before a patent can be filed, we may need to have a sponsor who agree to pay for the patent.
A lawyer will work with you to draft claims.
You will need to review the claims carefully to make sure
all the technical innovations are covered
Prepare the flowchart that describe your algorithm in a step by step way
Prepare the system charts
I suggest you document your work carefully and get into the habit to use flow charts and system charts to explain your hardware settings and steps.
