Kindergarten ELA
Universal Assessments
Letter Naming and Sounds
Each kindergarten students will be shown the 26 letters (mixed uppercase and lowercase) one letter at a time. This can be done with a window or flip cards.
The assessment will start using the letters of their name.
If a student does not know the letters in his/her name, the assessment will stop.
If a student knows the letters in his/her name, the assessor will continue showing the student the rest of the letters.
This assessment will not be timed; however, the assessor will take notes if the student takes more than 3-5 seconds per letter.
NWEA-Map Growth K-2 Assessment
All kindergartners students are given this online assessment three times a year (fall, winter, spring).
Decision Rules
Kindergarten Decision Rule:
If a child identifies fewer than 12 letter names and their corresponding sounds in the fall, or 24 letters/sounds in the spring, the child may be recommended for intervention.
If a child scores in the low area on the foundational sub-test on the NWEA-Map Growth K-2, additional data will be gathered and the student may be placed in an intervention.
