STUDENT RECOGNITION 2018-19:
I am happy to announce this year's Cord Bearers and Ushers for the Class of 2019 Graduation. Cord Bearers are the top eight members of the junior class and the honor is based on academic achievement and good citizenship. The Ushers are the next four students in line and they are also chosen based on academic achievement and good citizenship. Congratulations.

{NEW} COLLEGE NIGHT at Upper Moreland HS - Upper Moreland has been gracious enough to open up their College Night to Jenkintown Families!! Upper Moreland High School is hosting a Select A Session College Night on March 21st at 6:30 PM. Students and parents can select two out of three sessions to attend. The program is open to all parents and students in the high school. Each session will last approximately 30 minutes. An information table will be available prior to the first session - which will start promptly at 6:30PM. We hope you will join us for this exciting program. Registration is required - this is a FREE event - click HERE to register.
{NEW} COLLEGE FAIR at Upper Moreland HS - March 29, 2019 - 11:00-12:30pm - Click HERE to see what schools will be visiting. If you are interested in taking your child to this event, all you need to do is let Ms. Kafkalas and Ms. Laverty (kafkalac@jenkintown.org and lavertya@jenkintown.org) know that you are going and sign your child out in the main office and sign them back in after the event.
CLASS OF 2019 (12th Grade) Parents and students:
1) Students should keep an eye out for emails from colleges/universities requesting for additional information.
2) Local Scholarships:
{NEW} VHS SCHOLARSHIP: The VHS 2019 Scholarship program is now open. It’s open to current seniors who have taken at least one VHS class (they don’t need to be enrolled in a class now). Entries must be submitted by April 30, 2019 qualify. Three scholarships are awarded – one for $1000 and 2 for $500 each.
{NEW} The Greater Philadelphia Professionals Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers - Our Chapter is awarding a $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior who will be enrolling into a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) program at a four-year college or university in Fall 2019. {NEW} 2019-2020 Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia Scholarships: Deadline to apply is April 1, 2019. Click HERE to see if you are eligible to apply.
{NEW} Correctional Medical Care, Inc., based in Blue Bell, PA, has started a merit-based scholarship fund targeted at students in the SE PA region. In late Spring 2019, we will announce multiple one-time $1,000 tuition awards to students seeking a career in health care. The deadline for students to apply is April 30, 2019. {NEW} Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Gamma Alpha Beta Zeta Chapter (Abington Township, PA), is now accepting applications for the 2019 Gamma Alpha Beta Zeta General Scholarship! This $1,000 scholarship is designated specifically for high-school seniors residing or attending school in Abington Township, PA and surrounding areas. Click HERE for the paper application.
To be considered for this one-time award, applicants must:
Be graduating high school seniors planning to attend an accredited 4-year college or university;
Have a minimum GPA of 3.0;
Anticipate commencing his/her college education in the academic year following high school graduation;
Submit a current official transcript, proof of enrollment at an accredited 4-year college or university, and a personal statement/essay.
The complete application package must be postmarked by March 31, 2019. 2018-2019 LEGAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION: $1000 ---------> Click HERE for the application. The scholarship is open to any college student (or accepted high school senior) who has a 3.0 or higher GPA and is either currently pursuing or plans to pursue a law-related degree. What’s A Law-Related Degree? Pre-law, Paralegal Studies, Legal Assisting, Juris Doctor. Who Can Apply? High school seniors with a college acceptance letter, undergrads, or students currently pursuing their law degree. Application Deadline: June 15, 2019. All application materials must be emailed no later than June 15, 2019. Materials received later will be rejected, resulting in disqualification. Applicant Must Meet All Requirements: Applicant must be college students (or high school seniors with an acceptance letter) who are either already pursuing a law degree or plan to in the future, Hold a 3.0 or higher overall GPA, Be a US citizen.
The S.P.A.R.K.S. Foundation Scholarship: The S.P.A.R.K.S. Foundation College Scholarship Committee encourages applications from all high school students in their senior year whose intended major is in an area of the sciences and who are in need of financial assistance. The committee also considers scholastic achievement, academic promise and community service in addition to financial need. Click HERE to download the application.

The Guidance Department is STILL to schedule the Junior Class Individual Growth Plans (IGP’s) - meetings will begin in mid to late December. The purpose of the IGP is to maintain an ongoing record of a student’s progress from 7th through 12th grade. Some of the main component areas include Course selection, transition activities and career development, standardized testing, Transcript Review, and College Planning, post-secondary educational planning. Annual meetings are held with individual students and parents to review and plan for individual progress. The IGP meetings are conducted with both the parents and the student and are done during the school day. Meetings start as early as 7:30am and the last meeting of the day is 2:45pm. To schedule a conference with Ms. Kafkalas, you should call the Guidance Department at 215-884-1801. You may also email Chrissy at kafkalac@jenkintown.org. Conferences will be scheduled in 45-minute intervals. I look forward to working together with you on behalf of your child. **Please note that 7:30am meetings are very limited.
