CLASS OF 2016 (12th Grade) Parents and students:

1) This is a reminder that students should be checking their emails for important notices from colleges/universities.  Many schools email students with information about their online portals. Please notify Ms. Kafkalas is the college is requesting for Marking Period Grades or Mid-Year Grades (forward the email or make a copy to give to Ms. Kafkalas)

2) If your child is applying to college, please make sure to check the colleges Financial Aid Deadlines.  

3) Scholarships are being entered weekly into Naviance, make sure that you are logging in weekly to see if you qualify:

CLASS OF 2018 (11th Grade) Parents and students:

1) Guidance is now scheduling Junior IGP Meetings. Annual meetings are held with individual students and parents to review and plan for individual progress. Since course selection is right around the corner (February 2017), this is a perfect time to meet with your child’s counselor.  The IGP meetings are conducted withboth the parents and the student and are done during the school day. Meetings start as early as 7:30am and the last meeting of the day is 2:45pm.  To schedule a conference with Ms. Kafkalas, you should call the Guidance Department at 215-884-1801. You may also email Chrissy at kafkalac@jenkintown.org. Conferences will be scheduled in 45-minute intervals. I look forward to working together with you on behalf of your child. **Please note that 7:30am meetings are very limited.

3) Eastern Center for Arts and Technology will be visiting with the 11th Grade class on January 13, 2017.  To learn more about their programs and/or to have your child attend the Eastern Field Trip, information and forms are available here: https://sites.google.com/a/jtowndrakes.org/jenkintown-hs-guidance/eastern-center-for-arts-and-technology  The Eastern Field trip will be on Wednesday, February 22, 2017.  Forms may be downloaded from the guidance website and are due to guidance by January 20, 2017.

4) PSAT scores have been mailed home.  Please visit the Guidance Website for resources on how to interpret the scores. Kaplan will also be hosting a free live online interactive workshop on Sunday, Dec. 18th at 5pm or Saturday, January 7th at 4pm.  Learn more about the PSAT and how to interpret the scores and next steps in the college admissions process. SUMMER/SPECIAL PROGRAMS: START PLANNING NOW! Click HERE to see the full list!

1)  Interested in business or health care careers? Would you like a culturally diverse summer educational experience?  Are you a current 10th or 11th Grader?

The Pennsylvania School for Global Entrepreneurship (PSGE) at Lehigh University held July 2 - July 29, 2017 and the University of Pittsburgh Health Scholars Academy (UPHCSA) held on June 25 - July 22, 2017, former Governor's School programs, are accepting applications for the 2017 summer programs.  Current high school sophomores and juniors are encouraged to apply.

The application deadline is February 15, 2017.

2)  10th and 11th Graders: PFEW Applications are NOW Available: Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week 2017 is a unique and challenging program designed for high school sophomores and juniors.  PFEW furnishes a perfect opportunity to learn about career opportunities that students may not have considered.  What will you do at PFEW? By acting as an executive management team and running your own business, you and your peers will learn about our free enterprise system.  With the task of turning an “imaginary company” into a financial success, you will determine selling prices, marketing costs, budgets for production, research and development, financing and stock options.  You will develop your own marketing strategies and design an advertising campaign.  In essence  you will make all the decisions that are demanded of real life company executives. Throughout your PFEW adventure, you will meet and work with some of Pennsylvania’s top executives.  Representing career fields including law, engineering, manufacturing, advertising, environmental protection, computer technology, and politics.  These inspiring professionals will share their motivational success stories with you. INTERESTED? The EARLY BIRD APPLICATION DEADLINE is March 3, 2017, the final appellation deadline is April 7, 2017. 3)  Pennsylvania State Police Youth Week is a program designed to increase understanding among the state's youth and its law enforcement and to give first hand experience in the many areas of law enforcement including leadership, discipline, and self-esteem. You will learn how to work as a team and be taught self-esteem, as you will be the future Leaders of our state and nation. There will be classes in Pennsylvania Vehicle and Crime Codes, forensic sciences, radar, riot control, tactical drug operation through the use of specially trained dogs, weapon firing, and other police related skills.  Students should be physically fit, in good health, and have a good academic record. Any female or male student between the ages of 15-17 can participate in the six-day camp on June 11-17, 2017 at York College of Pennsylvania in York, Pennsylvania.  FEE: 150.00 which includes meals and lodging. 4)  11th Grade Males: Pennsylvania American Legion Keystone Boys State is a unique week long  FREE summertime educational program that does not emphasize classroom lectures and textbook learning. It is an activity born out of a need for youth training in practical citizenship, leadership and to instill a working knowledge of the structure and operation of government.  The program runs June 18 - June 24, 2017 at Shippensburg University.

Eligibility Criteria: 1. Only males who have successfully completed their junior year of high school and have at least one semester of high school remaining are to be considered. 2. Any boy who has previously attended a boys State is not eligible to attend a second session. 3. Only boys with outstanding qualities of leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty, and service to their schools are to be considered. Boys State was founded in 1935 to teach young men about the rights, privileges and responsibilities of American citizens.  The program focuses on hands-on participation in simulated city, county, and state governments. Operated by students elected to various offers, activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, intramural sports, law-enforcement presentations, etc.  If you have a male junior who is interested in the law enforcement, law, military and/or military academies this is a nationally recognized program!!!!  Don’t miss out.
