Community/Guidance Resources and Events:

1) Monday, January 30, 2017: The movie Embrace: Your Body, The Movement, Global Change: When Body Image Activist Taryn Brumfitt posted an unconventional before-and-after photo in 2013, it was seen by more than 100 million people worldwide and sparked an international media frenzy. EMBRACE follows Taryn's crusade as she explores the global issue of body loathing, inspiring us to change the way we feel about ourselves and think about our bodies. The movie is Monday, January 30, 2017 at the Plymouth Meeting 10 in Conshohocken. Parents need not register. Please note that we encourage students to register themselves as the registration includes a short survey about the profile of students who may be interested in veterinary medicine. This data helps us to plan future educational and recruiting programming.

SENIORS:  CLASS OF 2016 (12th Grade) Parents and students:

1) AP Exam Registration Forms are now available.  The deadline to sign-up for an AP Exam is Monday, February 27, 2017. To download a form, please clickHERE.

2) Midyear Grade Reports will be sent in Mid-February. Updated Transcripts and MP2 Report cards will be sent to all Common Application Schools and to schools whom students are still awaiting an admissions decision. 

3) Students should be updating their Family Connection Account in the COLLEGES Tab with their admissions decisions. 

4) Scholarships are being entered weekly into Family Connection/Naviance, make sure that you are logging in weekly to see if you qualify.  New scholarships were just added!!!  Log in today!

JUNIORS:  CLASS OF 2018 (11th Grade) Parents and students:

1) AP Exam Registration Forms are now available.  The deadline to sign-up for an AP Exam is Monday, February 27, 2017. To download a form, please click HERE.

2) Guidance is now scheduling Junior IGP Meetings. Annual meetings are held with individual students and parents to review and plan for individual progress. Since course selection is right around the corner (February 2017), this is a perfect time to meet with your child’s counselor.  The IGP meetings are conducted with both the parents and the student and are done during the school day. Meetings start as early as 7:30am and the last meeting of the day is 2:45pm.  To schedule a conference with Ms. Kafkalas, you should call the Guidance Department at 215-884-1801. You may also email Chrissy at kafkalac@jenkintown.org. Conferences will be scheduled in 45-minute intervals. I look forward to working together with you on behalf of your child. **Please note that 7:30am meetings are very limited.

Notable Summer Programs:

1) Do you know of a minority student with a 3.0 GPA or above, who may be interested in pursuing a business degree in college? The National Association of Black Accountants and Point Park University are once again sponsoring a FREE, in-residence, summer camp for high school students. Camp dates are June 25th - June 30th, 2017, and the location is Point Park University, Pittsburgh, PA.  Recognizing that preparation for a professional career begins in junior and senior high school, this one-week program is designed for qualified sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school.  The camp focuses on communicating opportunities for careers in accounting and while students work hard during the week, they also have a lot of fun. 2) Montclair State University, the largest four-year Hispanic-Serving Institution in New Jersey, is offering a Hispanic Student College Institute on August 1-3, 2017 for rising high school juniors and seniors (Class of 2018 and Class of 2019). There will be no cost for the students to participate and attend. The Institute will be a transformational experience for students who identify as Hispanic. They will be challenged to think big about their future and the impact they will have on their community after college. Academically committed students who identify as Hispanic are encouraged to apply online. Applications are now available, and space is limited. Institute participants will be eligible for scholarships to attend Montclair State University in the future and will receive certificates of completion to include on their résumés. Through the Hispanic Student College Institute, they will:

· Engage in career exploration and goal-setting initiatives

· Attend college-planning workshops

· Participate in a majors fair and mock college interviews

· Live on campus in Machuga Heights

3) STEM Exploration Day for girls in grades 5-10: March 25th from 12:30 - 5:00 at West Chester East High School.  Partake in over 60 interactive activities during the GETT Expo, Choose between a variety of in depth breakout sessions, Discover new ways to connect your passions to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. 4) Actuarial Science Camp for rising seniors at Lebanon Valley College: An actuary is a business professional who uses mathematical and financial tools to help identify and manage risk, so it's a great career for students who are strong mathematically but who are not necessarily interested in teaching. It's also great for students who like business and have good math aptitude.  An Actuary is a business professional who uses mathematical and financial tools to help identify and manage risk, so it’s a great career for students who are strong mathematically and are interested in Business, Finance or Economics.

This is a one-week summer program for rising high school seniors who want to learn more about the profession. Here's a link to the program web site:

5)  Health and Biomedical Sciences Summer Camp, which will be held at Lebanon Valley College from June 25-30 and July 23-28, 2017. 

 The goal of the Health and Biomedical Sciences Summer Camp is to provide a window into the scientific basis of human health.  Through lectures and hands-on laboratory investigations in state-of-the-art laboratories, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of molecular biology, pharmacology, immunology, biochemistry and medical ethics.  Students will learn how laboratory science can be translated into improved human health, and they will engage in investigative experiences that will allow them to apply their laboratory skills to real life problems.  In addition, students will interact with practicing professionals in fields such as medicine, physical therapy, toxicology, genetic counseling and biomedical laboratory research. 6) Pennsylvania American Legion Keystone Boys State is a unique week long summertime educational program that does not emphasize classroom lectures and textbook learning. It is an activity born out of a need for youth training in practical citizenship, leadership and to instill a working knowledge of the structure and operation of government. 

June 18 - June 24, 2017 at Shippensburg University

Eligibility Criteria: 1. Only males who have successfully completed their junior year of high school and have at least one semester of high school remaining are to be considered. 2. Any boy who has previously attended a boys State is not eligible to attend a second session. 3. Only boys with outstanding qualities of leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty, and service to their schools are to be considered.

7) PACT:  Program in Algorithmic and Combinatorial Thinking: https://algorithmicthinking.org/registration/, deadline to apply is March 5, 2017.  While it is true that computers and programming are a major part of modern computer science, the Program in Algorithmic and Combinatorial Thinking (PACT) – funded partially through the National Science Foundation and Rutgers University and hosted by Princeton University through the Center for Computational Intractability – goes beyond that. The program teaches students about the mathematics and algorithms fundamental to the computer science field. Many summer programs teach high school students programming and application development, but this six week intensive course is one of very few with a theoretical and proof-based emphasis.  This program will be held on the University of Princeton's Campus from June 26-July 28, 2017. The program fee is $1000 and the only requirements to participate are high school algebra, willingness to work hard and be challenged, and, above all, the desire to learn.

8) PFEW Applications are NOW Available: Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week 2016 (open to 10th and 11th Graders) is a unique and challenging program designed for high school sophomores and juniors.  PFEW furnishes a perfect opportunity to learn about career opportunities that students may not have considered.  What will you do at PFEW? By acting as an executive management team and running your own business, you and your peers will learn about our free enterprise system.  With the task of turning an “imaginary company” into a financial success, you will determine selling prices, marketing costs, budgets for production, research and development, financing and stock options.  You will develop your own marketing strategies and design an advertising campaign.  In essence  you will make all the decisions that are demanded of real life company executives. Throughout your PFEW adventure, you will meet and work with some of Pennsylvania’s top executives.  Representing career fields including law, engineering, manufacturing, advertising, environmental protection, computer technology, and politics.  These inspiring professionals will share their motivational success stories with you. INTERESTED? The EARLY BIRD APPLICATION DEADLINE is March 3, 2017, the final appellation deadline is April 7, 2017. 9) Interested in business or health care careers? Would you like a culturally diverse summer educational experience?  Are you a current 10th or 11th Grader?

The Pennsylvania School for Global Entrepreneurship (PSGE) at Lehigh University held July 2 - July 29, 2017 and the University of Pittsburgh Health Scholars Academy (UPHCSA) held on June 25 - July 22, 2017, former Governor's School programs, are accepting applications for the 2017 summer programs.  Current high school sophomores and juniors are encouraged to apply.

The application deadline is February 15, 2017.
