COLLEGE FAIRS | CAREER FAIRS | SERVICE ACADEMIES:
March 6, 2016: Veterinary Medical Career Fair and Info Session at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington DC! This free event is for anyone with an interest in the veterinary medical profession. The AAVMC’s recruiting event is a unique opportunity for prospective veterinary students to meet with admissions representatives from the veterinary medical colleges from the US and abroad. Information sessions are held to provide great information about various careers in veterinary medicine as well as helpful information on applying to veterinary school. March 10, 2016: Is your child interested in Dental and/or Medical School?? There is a local event in Fort Washington that you don’t want to miss. Drs. Mogyoros and Funt, Dr. Kevin Chin, General Dentist at Kevin Chin DDS PC, Katie Murt, Admissions Counselor at Penn State, and independent college educational counselor Byron Goldstein, will host a free 90-minute seminar that will detail everything participants need to know about the life of a medical professional, how to get into the top schools, and what they should be doing now to prepare for the future. Especially in the healthcare field, the initial high school years are crucial for planning higher education. Drs. Mogyoros and Funt will be giving thorough examples of their personal journeys into becoming oral and maxillofacial surgeons and what the career entails. Dr. Chin will discuss his journey through dental school and what being a general dentist is all about. Finally, Katie Murt and Byron Goldstein will inspire students to work hard in school, get the best grades and test scores, and follow a well-considered academic and extracurricular plan. 2016-2017 Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia Scholarships: offered to students of Greek descent or those pursuing studies in Greek disciplines, Classics, Archaeology, and Ancient History/Greek Studies. The eligibility rules and descriptions of the undergraduate scholarships and graduate scholarships for law, dental, medical and other disciplines are available on the web site; applications can be downloaded and/or completed electronically. PACAC Scholarship: http://www.pacac.org/pacac-scholarship. The PACAC Scholarships are each a one-year non-renewable scholarship for high school seniors graduating from PACAC member high schools in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This scholarship is intended to support a student's goal of continuing his or her education. Four scholarships will be awarded in April 2016. The top recipient will receive the $1500 Scholarship in memory of one of our founding fathers, Benjamin James. The other three recipients will receive a $1000 Scholarship. Scholarship applications will be due February 29, 2016 and recipients will be notified in April. PACAC will also invite the recipients to join the membership for lunch during this year's PACAC conference in June so we can hear these students' stories.
Family and Consumer Sciences/ Grace M. Reimard $500 Scholarship Award – 2016: The areas of Family and Consumer Sciences in which the scholarship recipient may study at college are: Family & Consumer Sciences Education, Foods and Nutrition, Dietetics, Housing and Interior Design, Child Development and Early Childhood Education, Fashion Design and Merchandising and Consumer Education. 10th GRADE STUDENTS & PARENTS:
The Guidance Department is starting to schedule the Sophomore Class Individual Growth Plans (IGP’s). The purpose of the IGP is to maintain an ongoing record of a student’s progress from 6th through 12th grade. Some of the main component areas include: Course selection, transition activities and career development, standardized testing, Transcript Review and College Planning, and post-secondary educational planning. Annual meetings are held with individual students and parents to review and plan for individual progress. Since course selection is right around the corner, this is a perfect time to meet with your child’s counselor.
The IGP meetings are conducted with at least one parent and the student and are done during the school day. Meetings start as early as 7:30am and the last meeting of the day is 2:45pm. To schedule a conference with Ms. Kafkalas, you should call the Guidance Department at 215-884-1801, ask for Ms. Chrissy Kafkalas. You may also email Chrissy at kafkalac@jenkintown.org. Conferences will be scheduled in 42-minute intervals. I look forward to working together with you on behalf of your child. (Please note that 7:30am meetings are very limited.)

University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science middle school summer program for girls: PennGEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science): is a week-long day camp for girls who are finishing 6th, 7th, and 8th grade this year and who have an interest in math, science, or engineering. Students will spend a week in UPenn’s world-class facilities with Penn faculty and students learning about how engineering affects our everyday lives. Camp runs from July 25-July 29, 2016 and the application deadline is APRIL 1, 2016….PLEASE NOTE: there are limited number of spaces. PFEW (For 10th and 11th Grade Students): Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week is designed to give young students first-hand knowledge experience with American free market economics and help them understand how our economy, and its health, affects them no matter what career path they may follow. PFEW has combined rigorous academic instruction with a hands-on approach to give students the knowledge and skills they will need for the work place of the future. Students will gain a unique experience by working with actual PA business representatives who will assist them in the creation of virtual companies. Students will alsi learn how to become better decision-makers; strengthen their strategic planning skills and sharpen their presentations. The Wildlife Leadership Academy is a five-day camp for PA students ages 14-17 that spend exploring the outdoors, biology, habitat and conservation while developing a whole new outlook on the environment. At either school, students will have hands on training in nature, interact directly with wildlife professionals, learn the newest research and technology in the filed, discover the beauty of the outdoors, and develop key leadership skills. Tuition is $500 and scholarships are available. Early Deadline is March 1 and regular decision is April 1. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Preface Summer Program 2016: Application deadline is March 25, 2016. The PREFACE Summer Program 2016 is a two-week residential summer experience for talented high school sophomores and juniors who will enter 11th or 12th grade in September 2016, from groups that have been historically and traditionally underrepresented or underserved in science, engineering, and technological fields, and are interested in pursuing careers in engineering and technological professions. To qualify, applicants must be entering the 11th or 12th grade in September, 2016. The PREFACE Selection Committee will review each application and make its recommendation to the Project Director. Criteria are high school academic performance, standardized test scores, quality of essay, and recommendations. The program is limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents from underrepresented and underserved backgrounds. In addition, since all programs are in English, students must have a strong understanding of the English language. PREFACE is funded through annual individual, corporate, and foundation contributions. PREFACE subsidizes each participant’s round-trip transpor- tation to Rensselaer, tuition, fees (including laundry), and room and board for the two-week session. The only costs to participants are the health center fee, and personal and miscellaneous expenses such as snacks and souvenirs.
