Original Cataloging of FAU Theses and Dissertations

Theses will be originally cataloged according to current cataloging rules and input into the OCLC data base.

An added entry will be assigned for each college and entered in OCLC as 710 20.

This added entry will bring all FAU theses together in the public catalogs by college and degree level.

Electronic Resource Cataloging for Digitized Theses

• 1. Search Aleph SB for the title. You will find 2 records in the index, monographic record and the e-resource record from ProQuest.

• 1. In the monographic record, copy the OCLC # and paste into OCLC line search

• 1. Click on “Edit” – “Derive” – “New Master Record” – Yes

• 1. In the fixed fields, “FORM” select “O” from the drop down menu; “DESC” select “i”

• 1. 040 field add $e rda

• 1. 100 field – add comma after author and add $e author.

• 1. NOTE: No call # is necessary for E-Resource records

  2. Change 260 field to 264 _1 Boca Raton, Florida : $b Florida Atlantic University, $c 2003.

• 1. Add 264_4 $c ©2003 (list of diacritic can be obtained by Ctrl E)

• 1. 300 field – before the pagination, add 1 online resource. Place parenthesis around the current pagination. Delete the size (i.e. 24 cm)

• 1. 337 & 338 fields are to be edited.

• 1. 337 change unmediated to computer. Change $b n to c.

     1. 338 change volume to online resource. Change $b nc to cr.

  2. 520 field – copy the Abstract from the Digitalized record https://fau.digital.flvc.org/islandora/object/fau%3Aroot and Paste Unformatted

• 1. Add 655_4 Electronic Thesis or Dissertation

• 1. Go to “Cataloging” – “Search” – “Online Constant Data” – Okay

• 1. From the listing choose college and degree 710, then “Apply Selected

• 1. In OCLC edit the 710 field for the year of publication of the original Thesis.

• 1. Once again, Go to “Cataloging” – “Search” – “Online Constant Data” – Okay From the listing choose RDA ETD 856, then “Apply Selected”

• 1. Copy the Purl from the correct Author and Call # and paste over the current URL in the 856 field, $u

• 1. Validate Record

• 1. Produce

• 1. In OCLC edit 049 field to show FGME and EXPORT to Aleph SB

• 1. In Aleph SB, check the record and in Web OPAC (Cntrl O) check that the URL connects to the digitized Thesis.

• 1. Make note of the Aleph SB System number, for use in statistics.

  2. Count Cataloging E-Resource statistics

Once electronic cataloging procedures have been completed, place hard bound copies of Theses on the designated truck for withdrawal.
