Ozone Layer

The Ozone Layer

Questions:  What is ozone? Where does it come from?  How does it protect us from ultraviolet radiation?  How does Freon or other CFC’s eat up the ozone?

Possible Explorations:  There are many resources available on the topic of CFC’s and the atmosphere.  Students can do a fact find on this topic and build a classroom “knowledge” tree or metacognitive map of what they have discovered.  The map may contain:  the chemical configurations for CFC’s, the product names of CFC’s, the uses of CFC’s, the laws that were enacted about the use of CFC’s, the layers of the atmosphere, the spectrum of light that enters the atmosphere, the origin and nature of ozone, the chemical interaction of ozone and CFC, diseases caused by UV light, areas where the ozone layer is depleted, the growth of the depletion zone.
